Question Salt Corrosion?

Hey everybody..

I'm considering buying a 993 right now and have my eyes set on 2 cars. One is a 21k mile 1995 C2 coupe in Texas, the other is a 19k mile 1997 C2 coupe in Colorado. According to Carfax, they have both spent their lives in their respective states. I'm in Florida btw.

I'm kind of stuck here though, as they are about the same price and I'm wondering how much corrosion the car could have suffered from salt in Colorado, and if this is a big deal? Does this kind of thing affect the car drastically, and will it cause major problems eventually? Just wanted to see if anyone here has experience with this or advice.

Right now I'm drawn to the 1997, but wanted to know if it's worth sticking to the 95 just for this reason?

Thanks!

Get a PPI done & let them know you are concerned with salt issues. Really, it should have been a summer car, & very rarely seen salted roads.

You can also ask for pics of the underside, you will see all the salt corrosion if there is any. Other then that, don't be worried about it at all. The car from TX might need it's top end done, due to living in hot weather all it's life. Again, a PPI will show you that.

Really with both being under 30kmi, they should be 9.5's out of 10, & not need anything, or have other worries.

I believe Colorado does not use salt on its roads. Should not weed either one out, if you really like both have them fully checked out and decide.

A 95 will avoid the SAI CEL issues. Thats the reason I limited my search to MY95.

That's not a good reason to discount all the rest. The SAI CEL issue is WAY OVER hyped. 95's still have the issue, they just don't throw the cel. So the repair does not escape the 95's. You can just pass SMOG with the issue with a 95.

Smile Colorado Salt

mto is correct - Colorado does not use Salt. Additionally, I live in Wisconsin and salt is used heavily all winter. I never drive my 95 Cab in the winter. But I do drive in the winter and have had zero issues with salt corrosion.

My Mercedes, Acura, Honda and a long list of vehicles I drive in the snow have had no problems. And I do a lot of miles - typically 250k miles before I get something new.

Salt will not corrode a vehicle when the temp is less than freezing (no chemical reaction). So, if you live in a "salt zone" simply hit a car wash once a week and your vehicles will be fine.

On the downside it gets really, really, really cold. I guess I just love both days of summer!

I live in Colorado. We don't use salt on the roads. We used gravel through the 80's and they use Magnesium Chloride now. Your car will be fine as far as corrosion goes if it lived all it's like in Colorado.
