Ready to buy, I THINK, advice plz......
Newb here! After many months of looking/researching various 911's we really like the 993's. IMO the prices are good on these right now. However, I've been asking around and can't find anyone in my area to work on these. I live in a small town (waynesboro, 17268) in Pa. I know these beauties have mechanical issues but don't want to get one and have to drive hours to a shop. I'm located in the Gettysburg, Chamberburg, Frederick, Md. area. Any help in finding a good shop/mechanic would be appreciated. Also, give me some reassurance this will be a good purchase. Thanks all for you time.....

I don't know your area very well but I do know there are independat shops around there. There are some folks on rennlist.com that would be able to help recommend one, I am sure.
As for the car itself... these things are very reliable. As long as the basics are sorted out you shouild have many miles of trouble free driving.
Enjoy the hunt!

Go for it. On the reliability point, I've been fortunate to have spent less than $4K on routine maintenance in 10 years of ownership, or about 35K miles. That's pretty reasonable coming from 1990 C2, 1978 930, 1988 Carrera. You are buying the final iteration of 30 years of development form a top notch engineering shop.

Also, please make sure that you read up on the secondary injection issue that causes a Check Engine Light (CEL). I was fortunate to have this addressed as part of the extended emissions warranty, where the top end was replaced at no cost to me. Occurs on some 96-98 model years.

Thanks all...
Thanks for all of the input. I've been trying to decide between a C6 vette or a 993. The only thing really holding me back on the 993 was finding a shop. I did post on rennlist and contacted my region PCA club. To date only one response with a shop and it is still over 90 minutes away. As soon as I can find a local (within an hour) I belive I will pull the trigger. Do you guys think these will go down in $$$ anymore? Or is now the time to buy. Thanks all for your time.

Sometimes it helps to bump your thread back to the first page by replying to your own thread. Not everyone sees the forum every day so some may have missed it.

I actually posted on rennlist a few weeks ago , that is where the PCA contact generated from. I most recently found this site and thought I'd ask here. I'm having no luck finding a shop/mechanic in my area, zip 17268. There has to be someone out there close who owns one of these beauties..........

How far are you from Lancaster? I know there is a dealer there (where I bought my 993) and they had some very nice classics, 356's, 930, downstairs in the owners mini museum.
Price for work might be higher but, I would think they do good work, although I cant personally vouch for it.
Dont be scared of the maintenance, its really not bad..find one that is in good shape and I would think you would have little to do.
IMO - there is no question between a C6 and a 993, C6 is way faster but, seriously very common will always drop in value, its pretty impressive that even in this economy the 993 prices have held up considering they are 12-14 years old...it is a relatively modern classic.
whats your name on RL? I am sure there are guys in the area that can help..

Thanks..
I'm actually two hours west of Lancaster. I'm right on the Mason-Dixon line near Hagerstown-Frederick, Md. You have a good point about the C6 not holding any value. Super fast cars but really drop in value after a few years. They are a good buy for the money but you can't beat the classic lines of the 93. I go by iluvrots on renn.
