Newbie; which tires best? Pls help!

Hi All,

I am new to this forum but have read many nice review and seen son many beautiful 993s in this forum.

I have kept my 997 S for 5 and a half years now and have taken the plunge on a yr 97 993 Carrera S. Midnight Blue with grey interior.

As the tires are due for new ones; like to know which tires suit this car best and I am based on here in Malaysia. I've tried to search the forum but to no avail.

My experience with the 997 is Michelin PS2 being the best for its softer compound and tremendous steering feedback. I did change to Bridgestone once but totally dissappointed, and since then have stick back to Michelin "N" specs tires.

Having been to the official Porsche website for 993 recommendations, they rate it as below but I would really love to hear your personal opinions.

A. Pirelli P Zero Rosso (N4) & Conti sport contact2 (N2) (Dry +++, Wet +++)
B. Michelin PS2 (N3) (Dry +++, Wet +)
C. Bridgestone POtenza S-O2A (N3) (Dry +, Wet ++)

Thank you guys in advance.

There are so many options.

I feel the PS2's are great in the wet, & a great all round tire. If you go with the Conti, get the Sport Contact 3's, not the 2's.

You don't need to get a "n" spec tire, a lot of us run on what fits & have had great results.

But if I had the $$ to spend, & wanted a great all round tire, it would be the PS2's. On the 993 expect around 10,000mi out of the rears.

Thumbs up

Thank you guys.

That's good advice. I have just send my car for a full check up and to replace the rubber seals and etc.

Cant wait to lay my hands on the car. The 993 drive so differently compare to the 997 and gives you that touch of connection with the car more than anything.

Contemplating if to put the turbo tails..

Do they have zenon lights for this car from OE? Malaysia got some with after market HIDs.

One last myth, can I drive the 993 as confidently as the 997? Cause i hv heard that the tail tends to swing out quite a fair bit.. Advice??

Cheers matee... Will post pics once car back...

If you put the TT tail on, do something to the front as well.

Yes, the cars came with HID lights, you can get kits to swap them over, there like $3000 from Porsche.

Yes, you can drive the car hard like the 997, the suspension is almost the same, & I feel the 993 is little more forgiving due to the feedback & lower HP.

I like PS2s for everyday use and marginal road use. RE11 is my weekend-racer tire...much stiffer with better grip, but not as quiet or pleasant.

We have been running Michelin PS2 for most of the cars life. However, I just put a set of Bridgestone Pole Position RE050A's (UTQG 280)...they are amazing!!! Completely changed the way the feels/handles...I can't believe its even the same car. I'm considering putting them on my street set of wheels for my 997TT.
