What is the best choice for oil in my 1997 Porsche 911?

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I would like real world input from owners.

Thanks in advance!

Mobil 1 synthetic 15W50 every 300 miles or once a year whichever comes first. And don't forget to use Fuel stabilizer Stabil Marine formula for the ethanol fuel we're forced to buy.

You're very welcome and enjoy the 993, it is truly the last of the air-cooled legacy.
Oops, I meant 3000 miles not 300!! But 300 is overkill even if you don't drive it that much in 1 year.

Agreed...you could probably do 5000 or once a year, but it never hurts to change it more often. I just picked up a 97 993 C2 and will do it about 3-4000 or yearly. I change the oil in my Cayman about the same!

Did you just get the car as well?

I have not heard of Motorcraft. Is it an Audi factory fill? There is a new Synthethic from Motul that is supposed to be good for the Porsche engines. Oil brand is quite personal and everyone has their favorites. Porsche lists all their recommended factory approved brands. Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W50 for the classic air-cooled and 0W40 European formula for the newer water cooled versions of 987, 986, 996, 997, etc. the older cars need different levels of anti-wear additives (ZDDP, zinc, phosphorus, sulfur) at least 1200 ppm in their formulation which has been cut back for the modern cars to 800 ppm-1000 ppm to save the catalytic converters. All this is discussed in depth on Pelicanparts.com forum (do search for oil thread).

but Porsche says my motorcraft oil will last 15000 miles, they cant be wrong. they're Porsche! They did recommend to lubricate my sunroof track every 5000 miles though. Im religious about that. Never miss a lubing.

Audipwr,
Where are you buying this Motorcraft oil? From the Porsche dealer? What are you driving a 993?

I used Castrol Full synthetic 5w-50w. At 40k I sold the car to a buyer who did a indepth PPI. Dealer said motor was like new. Never gets cold enough here to worry about 0w oil.

Don't use single weight oil if you drive in the colder temperature areas of the USA!!!! The old practice of single weight oil of the old racers days will not work with today's engines and multi-viscuosity oils. Wear occurs mostly during start-up from cold engines that have not been driven often. When cold the heavy weight oils don't get circulated to their working protection areas fast enough when cold. That's why I recommended 15W50 for moderate temperature operation, 0 or 5W40 for colder regions.
