Opinions on 996TT purchase
Hi all, I'm new to this forum but have been on the Cayenne forum for a while now. This place looks like a great resource for info for the 996TT. Looking at all of regular places. Found a 2002 966TT w/32K at a local independant dealer. I test drove and wow, definetly a serious step up from the 928 (of course). Car is silver, grey interior, carbon steering wheel, shofter, e brake, door sills, silver painted console, silver dials. Has bose CD w/sub, PSM, heated seats, porsche sport exhaust. Dealer has agreed to a PPI at my dealer of choice. Cars seems tight, no paint work except the front bumper, brake appear to be new, lots of pad and NO ridges on the rotors. Smoked a little on first start up but ran real nice. One or two little chips but overall very nice, stock wheels etc. The best thing is the maintenence book is filled out by the same dealer and shows services at 4 miles, 16K, 26K and 30K, just 2000 miles ago. What do you guys think and what should I specifically look for? I have been reading the forums to death trying to learn what I can. The other question is now it's October, should I just wait till spring to look? Yes they mark up the cars in the spring BUT the car will be a year older too. Thanks in advance for the help! Cheers!

It got a little more interesting late yesterday. I went to look at another car, 2003 w/ only15K miles, midnight blue, sport seats shells color matched as well as the console, not quite as many options etc, from a private seller. Car is bone stock. Seemed tighter than the other car and a little softer, but not as jarring...paint is not in the best shape, looks like someone wiped it down when it was dirty. I'm great at detailing so I know I can get the paint to be OK. Same kind of deal on PPI, 2nd owner, nice guy but not really a true car guy. All records indicate he did all services at reputible porche dealer in area sold to him by the same porsche dealer. Siver one is about $60K asking, Blue is about $66K. So 6K for a year newer and almost 1/3 less miles. Not sure what I should do. The blue car felt somehow like it had been driven not as hard, clutch felt a little better etc. What to do, what to do.....thanks guys for any guidance. Who offer the best third party warranty?

I have a blue one. I love the color. Good luck. PPI. and carfax...then go for the one you love. Prices might go up. The local auction (mannheim)...they are all being bought by europeans and shipped out (Eastern Europeans ....). So, the market in the US may change in the future. Prices might actually go up.
Don't hold me to this. My data is from an auction driver. But, he is a former state trooper, etc. Honest to the bone.

Two things to look for.
1. Second Gear Pop-Out Issue (Search this forum or see the sticky at the top of the forum page)
2. Type I and Type II Overrevs (These are logged in the cars Computer "DME") Some Type I overrevs are ok, but the Type II's is another story)

Thanks guys, keep the info coming, I'm leaning towards the blue one myself. Didn't have any issues when I drove it, no 2nd gear pop out, ran really well on the highway. We drove for about 40 minutes including runs over 100 mph. Slight vibration thru the wheel at speed so I'll have them check for a bent rim, but I think it's just a balance issue. The PPI will tell me alot I'm sure but w/ such low miles.....

Thanks guys, anything else I should specifically look for at the PPI? I think I'm going to go forward w/the blue one and get the PPI done asap. BTW, what is the purpose of the flared upper area (shoulder) on the sport seats? Any one who has them, how are they on long drives?

Oh, one more question....the owner says the dealer did a chip for the car, that a tech from Germany actually did the chip/flash install and that he had to leave the car w/them for a couple of days. This dealer has their own chassis dyno as well. I did notice on the test drive that the boost guage went up to 1.2 bar at full throttle. Any idea what they did and whose chip this might be? It was done at an authorized Porsche dealer, same place he bought the car. Thanks

No way of telling just by how much boost you're making......push the previous owner for details or the shop who did it should have records....good luck
