Is a brake-flush a DIY, or is it tricky?

Hi all,

Yesterday I found my brake pedal being inconsistent in how far down
I had to press before I got resistance/braking. Do you think this is old
brake fluid, or something else? If I should get new brake fluid, should I
1 - Do it myself with tools I can get cheaply?
2 - It's easy enough that any decent car shop can do it well?
3 - Only take it to a Porsche expert?

thanks,
Joe

Depending how much experience you have and how comfortable you feel working on cars, it's a fairly easy job. The parts are cheap, you can buy a bleeder kit for under $50.

I would suggest taking it to a dealer or a local indy shop, they will do it in 30minutes.

I have heard that you need a Porsche dealer special computerized unit for the late Porsches. I DO know of a gent with an 2004 street GT3 and he and a buddy bled them the old style way as mentioned above. Says they work fine. Perhaps someone on the GT3 list or racing specific might be able to give you direct info. Mine are fine but I am wondering about this also.
Good luck and PLEASE give us feedback on your outcome?

It's easy, I'm not a mechanic nor would anyone pay me to be one but it's not difficult. The most time consuming part is taking off and putting the wheels back on. I recommend doing it with someone who has done it before your first time. Go to your local PCA meeting and find someone who does Driver Education events and they probably know how to do it. You can also read the steps off of Renntech or Pelican parts. Good luck.

I got the fluid changed, and the problem didn't go away.
They've diagnosed it as a bad master cylinder... crud.
