A newbie question regarding OIL
Sounds stupid but is changing the oil at 4600miles too early? Because someone said that I should not change my oil until 20k miles.
I thought 20k is how long the oil can last and that is for the purpose for dealers to save money by not changing the oil on cars too early?

Check the link above, maybe someone can correct him? or me? because I know that 6speed has alot of experts

The factory (for the turbo) recommends changing the oil every 15k miles or every year. In Europe they recommend changing every 12.5k miles. Most owners change the oil more often than that. There is no problem in changing oil sooner. All new Porsches come with standard 0w40 Mobil1. They do not use "break in oil".

It's a turbo car.. and a highly powerful one. I change the oil much more often than the factory says. If you can do it yourself then it's obviously easier saying this... Kevin will kill me for saying this but yes a couple of times I have gotten lazy and not drained the quart per turbo oil cooler tho (bad I know)....

Amen to that. 3K Mobile 1 and the filters. Cheapest maintenance possible. Not to mention, your 15K suggestions come from EPA "suggestions" to the manufacture. They are trying to cut down the amount of oil that is used.

I'm vehemently with Stephen on this. Motor oils have not
changed recently in any way that magically makes them
any better able to handle the contaimination it suffers
with use. Especially in the initial period when the car burns
a lot of oil, it means that there is considerable interaction
between oil and combustion products. The oil is contaminated
by gasoline and acidic combustion by-products. Oil has a
finite amount of acid-neutralizing additives, and when they are
used up, you need to change the oil.

For what it's worth there are a group of guys over on LS1Tech who are having their synthetic oil tested every couple of thousand miles and not changing it.
The last I read one of the guys was around 18k miles on the same oil and the analysis came back saying it was still in great condition...

Deetz,
My Cayenne TT has a service indicator built into the computer that tells me when to service. Do you have the same thing on yours? I have almost 28,000 miles and have changed the oil twice.
