Differences between 2001 and 2002 911 TT's?
What are the differences between the 2001 and 2002 911 TT's? I am even interested in the minor changes.
I know with the non-turbos, from 2001 to 2002 Porsche increased the displacement (3.4 to 3.6L), and made minor changes to the bumpers, headlights, etc. I wonder if the TT's had any changes. I have a friend who is looking at used 911TT's and he is coming to me for information.
Also, what was the factory warranty on the 2001's and 2002's in the United States? Were they the same 4 year/48,000 miles warranty or was it a 2 year/24,000 miles warranty in 2001?
Also, if someone could provide me with some background history (such as what year they were first made and what changes happened when) on the watercooled 911 TT's, I'd appreciate it.

What I am certain of is that the 2002 came out with the X50 package, which is a special factory engine upgrade giving you around 450HP from 415HP. I also know that the Bose stereo system came in the 2002 and also their was a glove box. Thats all i am sure of

If you're buying a used 911 TT then I would definitely go for a 2002 and get the X50. My personal opinion is that the turbo market was flooded with cars and there are a significant number of turbos available. It appears that prices are in the 60-75% of MSRP - a HUGE savings and a lot of these cars have less than 8k miles.
The X50 gives you a lot of punch for the price.

The only 2001 cars that had the front bumperettes were the early production cars, not all 2001 models have them, only few actually do, early production 2001 models also has solid spoke wheels then hollow spokes were introduced, the 2001 does indeed have a 4yr/48,000 mile warranty, X50, Aerokit and Bose were new options in 2002.

Some differences are (all of the following wre standard on 02 but not available or option on 01s...):
- Bose sound system
- Glovebox on passenger side
- on 02 and up they deleted the little thing under steering colum where you were supposed to put the manuals
- 02 and up have hollow spoke wheels. The first 01s had solid spoke wheels...One way you can tell is that hollow spokes have a solid metal valve stem with a nut at the end of it
- Rain sensor and self-dimming inner and outer mirrors are standard on 02s and up
- The center air vent changed in 02
- The cup holders were added as a standard feature to 02 models
If I think of anymore I'll let you know...- - 03s and up have a new GPS (PCM II) and a new CD changer (CDC-4)

Late production '02s have the " X50 " exhaust with opened up baffles for throatier sound , updated clutch throw out bearing and updated ( still plastic/rubber ) Bosch diverter valve ( that still honks , but not as bad as earlier design ) .
There were production line updates to suppress rattles/noises in the sunroof and dash area .
All 2002s ( 996 and Boxster ) also went from the shiny plastic to matte soft touch control buttons on the dash and radio faceplate and redesigned slimline two-stage cupholder vs the chunky Audi sourced ones in '01 .
'03 has standard slot loading in-dash CD with MOST bus digital connection ,the latter making stereo essentially incompatible with current aftermarket sound electronics .

after reading of the differences, I am very happy I got an 02 (picked up last week). also bought a certified pre-owned TT which adds an add. 2 years up to 100l on the factory warranty. I could have bought the car without being CPE car and it would have cost 2k less. I felt that 2k for the added protection was definitely $ well spent.

I think the 02 with the changes from 01 is definately the way to go. And if you want to upgrade stereo stay away from the 03. I am sure in time the aftermarket will have some upgrades for the 03
When I bought mine I did not know there were any differences from 01 to 02 and then the dealer explained them and I was happy to get an 02!

Or am I missing something? (I'm a "stereo guy" so if a 2003 has some problems I don't understand, I'd like to know before buying a car that can't be "Stereo'ized")
