tiptronic turbo

Maybe its the difference between US HP and metric HP, and crank vs wheels, but here is another data point saying no more than 530HP (similar to what a couple of sources in Australia have said to me).

2002 30k miles.... 540 rwhp tuned at 28k..no tranny issues at all!!!!!my mechanic eddie bello at rpm north said up to 700 hp and to be on the safe side if you want more power upgrade the torque converter...My question is can we rwd convert this tranny?????

That's a very grey area, Stephen and Alex have mentioned that it throws up a few error codes, due to more electronics on the Tippy. Wonder if there is someone out there who has got around it!

Looking at all the feedback and related posts it seems the US tuners think that tranny can take more power than what the European/UK/Australian tuners think. Not sure why this would be, especially as its unlikely that the US model is different to the rest of the world.
Another factor when relating to the Merc 600SL as a high torque motor running this gearbox, is that as a heavy rear engine car, the 996tt will have much less wheelspin than the Merc would, which in the Merc relieves the stresses as the wheels break loose.
The conclusion I'm drawing is that there is a gearbox risk for a tune over 500hp (ie. more than just a flash), however by changing the gearbox oil more regularly and not slamming the car around in 1st gear, things should be OK with an increased risk for premature failure / excessive wear.
If something were to break, what parts are likely to be affected and how difficult (expensive!) would it take to fix the tiptronic?

don't think in negative way ! it was a member on this forum that had an 9ff tiptronic gearbox and he wanted to sell for ( what i remember ) 10k.
if this gearbox is good for the sl600, cl600, s600 and with torque of 1000Nm why will not be ok for a 996tt with maximum 900Nm ?!

I'm trying not to be negative, I just don't want to blow up my transmission after making mods! Hence looking for wider feedback, as there is conflicting information about what this transmission can support (I have a couple of sources saying its too risky for >500HP).
My mod list is not too extravagant, I'll be doing for a total of 550-600 crank HP:
- BMC air filter + possibly second air snorkel
- K16/16G or K16/K24 hybrids + flash from either EPL or UMW
- 70mm exhaust.
Also regarding the gearbox in the sl600, do we know if it is exactly the same gearbox, maybe the 9ff people modify the Porsche version with the bits put into the sl600 (speculation).
Keep providing more feedback/experiences with tiptronic modified cars.

If your not going beyond 750 HP you will have no issues with your tip, I also hope you haven't been speaking to Shane B (won't mention the company name) from Queensland?

Hi GTreta.
I agree. The info from the US folks can't be ignored, maybe us Aussies are too paranoid . I figure changing the transmission oil and not abusing the car by slamming it in low gears or brake boosting I should be OK.
