When Is An Engine REALLY Broken In?

I am curious when forum members and industry experts consider an engine fully broken in?

I am referring to the rings setting, the trans gears, and all the moving parts.

Is this 1,000 miles, 5,000 mile or ????

After 1000 miles, drive it like you stole it and it will thank you.

That sounds great, but I have to wonder if all the moving parts in the drivetrain really have enough time, at 1,000 miles to really be properly broken in for long term dependability.

I know the number of miles for complete break in is considerably higher in other vehicles.

The engine and drive train are considered "fully broken-in" one second before failure

The better-built a motor, the less time needed for break-in. In the 50's with
looser tolerances and rougher finishes, there might be significant wearing in to,
but with today's closer fits and mirror finish bores, it is better to do a systematic
and progressively 'assertive' break-in process for the first 800-1000 miles, and
then push it. Babying the motor can fail to supply enough pressure on the rings
to get them to seat properly. If they get a glaze, it'll be bad. Kids shouldn't be
allowed to stay in their parent's house into their 20's and motors shouldn't be
coddled a long time either.

When I bought my last Porsche, I asked the dealer about break-in period. He said, "If we were in Germany, I'd tell you not to drive over 100mph for more than an hour or two at a time, but here in the states, you don't have to worry. Just don't drive in one gear for a long road trip right away."

Marty,

Yes, My Dealership tells me they run them very hard... I wonder if they need to come to Tx2K8 to see our American definition of a HARD break in !!!!! I can't wait to see all these modded Porsche in one location! I think this will make Tx2k even more special!!! I hope some Ruf will attend also... it would be great if Ruf out of Dallas would be a sponsor??
Merry Christmas

I broke in my GSXR600 that way, and it runs stronger and harder than any of my friends bikes. I also topped out the bike after it was fully warmed up, up to 167mph, with 2 miles on the odometer. And put 10,000 worry free miles in 3 months on it, no problems at all.

I don't know what current Porsche factory protocol is (meaning 996 and newer sleds). But I would make two comments.

1. If you think you rings care past the first few thousand revolutions, I'd sure like to know why.

2. The factory used to (maybe still does) dyno every turbo motor at WOT for a period of time. Running it under full load should be more stressful on the motor, but I can't see how the parts you are breaking in would care.

I was told to keep the RPM’s under 4000 from mile 0-1000 and below 4800 from mile 1001 to 2000. Since it took 1 year to get to 2000 miles, I changed the oil and oil filter and the car is very strong.

More Important - Warm Up and Oil Changes

CJV, great link! I was told by my mechanic to run it hard too. He did say ALWAYS make sure the car is at operating temp when you drive it hard. Never, ever run it hard cold. He also asked me to bring it in for an oil change after the first 500mi and then again at 1500 mi.

Warm up and oil changes are far more inportant. I never run over 3000mi on my Mobil One and never put the car away for the winter with dirty oil in it. Even though synthetic is great it still gets dirty.

Good luck!
