Smells like fuel - mayday!!
Hi all. Alex - we discussed this back in the summer but the problem has resurfaced, and perhaps for the worse.
I took the Niner out for a winter rip this afternoon and came back home. Parked the car back in the garage, swung open the door, and caught a little whiff of what smelled like fuel. Hmm.
Went into the house, came back into the garage a few minutes later, and now a smell is obviously coming off the car. YIKES!
I backed the car out of the garage, only to find the floor bone-dry.
I have pretty much gone bonkers, crawling around every inch of the car, sniffing away like Toucan Sam. Reason I say this is, it's difficult to determine where the smell is coming from. No smell inside the cockpit or front boot.
I even went so far as to invite over some construction workers from across the road, asking them what they smelled and where it was coming from. (Just to make sure I wasn't losing my marbles!)
The concensus is that it's almost certainly fuel; it's definitely noticeable but not overwhelming; and if we were to try to pinpoint the location, it would be on the driver's side of the engine bay.
Sharky and I discussed this over the phone in the summer. I took the car to the local Porsche shop but they could not find any (visible) leaks of any kind in or under the car.
It's worse than when I last drove the car (August).
Any ideas? A tiny leak somewhere resulting in vapor?
Thanks very much for your help guys. I'm a little freaked, what with a six-month-old in the house.

When I had a fuel leak with my supercharged m3 it also gradually got worse, strong vapor/odor and nothing on the ground. Was my fuel leak starting to leak slowly between the seals of the fuel rail and smell like raw fuel inside cabin too though, could be because engine is in front and in Porsche its behind u, get it checked asap, last thing u need is to have ur engine go up and ignite . Good luck

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your car? I didn't and mine burned up. I now carry a Halon 2.5 pound unit. Cheap insurance. It's disheartening to stand there and watch your car go up in smoke.

hey toma, with us being closed for the holidays it's a bit tough to diagnose. I just PM'd you James' cell since he's in Canada right now (got there today) but if you can't smell it inside the car then it's not coming from the front and fuel pump. It could well be the fitting between the fuel line (driver rear) to the rail? If you can get that up to the dealer and maybe call me or James etc... It's not going to be visibile because it's likely a microleak and not enough to throw a CEL yet but enough to where you can smell it

Hey Van
my car was leaking fuel too. It is where the fuel line attaches to the fuel rail. I is located beneath the intake plenum. Get you hand on the fitting and start the car, you will feel the fuel if it is leaking from that spot. EVO has designed a new fitting thats alot better than the silly one they had before
Hope this helps

to the original poster: does the car start in the morning? or does it crank a few times? if there's a hole, it may not get enough gas to crank over immediately. i thought my battery was dying on my trip.
i drove ~2000 miles with a decent leak. however, it would just leak onto the suspension, and never made it to the ground. jack the car up and check it out underneath before driving it around again.

hey van, I know we did the car a while ago back when and I'm pretty sure they had the old style one (same as chuck's). I'll see if I have a new-style one at the shop and send it out etc...
