Rough Shifting when cold (6spd)

Rough Shifting when cold (6spd)
In the morning when I start my car up and pull it out of the driveway, I have a hard time shifting for the first couple of minutes. The gearbox feels very notchy and doesn't like to go into to gear. I am in Ca and the coldest its been here so far is around 39 degrees, so its not too bad. After the car warms up, everything is fine. What could be the problem, or is this normal?

i had the same problem with my 993 and i found a solution. A lot of people put Mobil 75w-90 Gear Lube thinking that is the factory spec. There is only one place in the USA that i'm able to find the real formulated for Porsche Mobil Delvac 75W-90 gear lube (dealer aside).
Prior to using this specific Mobil Delvac product, i tried Redline, Swepco, regular Mobil 1 75W-90. Each of them had slightly different shifting characteristics - but none of them nearly as good as Mobil Delvac 75W-90 gear lube. It is also my understanding that the dealer sells the correct stuff for about $100/quart (talk about black gold).
In any case, this is the only place i found in the US and it is $42.50/gallon. Try this and report back. It transformed my 993!

Redline
Some racers combine some product "Shock Proof"? with it to improve
the shear strength.

yep as I stated above, I highly recommend the Mobil Delvac. I am also one that is highly skeptical of additives/lubes/oils.... but this stuff really works! i was told that this delvac stuff was designed in concert with the porsche engineers and formulated specific for prosche and from the results i believe it!

Now my own conclusion (I always try and separate out my opinions from what is more concerete):
Here is what I suspect is the case: porsche gearboxes have a significant amount of "slop" in them. In part, porsche covers up the slop with the dual mass flywheel and likewise when you go to a 964RS type of single lighterweight flywheel you hear the gearbox rumble, quite a bit more. I've also noticed a wide variance between different porsches (of the same model) and some will make a racket with a single mass flywheel and others are pretty quite. My 993 had a louder tranny and it made a big difference in it. If you've never had a problem with syncro's, well count yourselves lucky as one of those that got a tighter gearbox. But if you do, redline, mobil, swepco didn't help me, but this stuff did. my 2 cents...
