New Aussie 996TT owner - questions about performance mods

I agree with slant911, just did an exhaust, diverters, plugs, intake and UMW tune.
Call Kevin, he will detail the many variables and how he utilizes them in his 996TT tune. I have done this before and the UMW tune builds power with increased drivability.

Another question about the diverter valve mod, I assume this is more than an upgraded wastegate, but that the exhaust at full boost gets diverted from the muffler, like a blow off valve? This must be pretty loud at full boost?

Chewy,
Yes, from Brisbane, and seems like apart from Mark in Melbourne, there are not too many other Aussies participating in this community lately. The 996tt is a pretty rare car in my neck of the woods due to its high cost, which probably explains the lack of Aussies participating here.
Although I have not rung around my local turbo tuners, I'll assume that no one locally has any experience with the 996tt and I have to look Stateside...

Welcome Denadob from fellow 996tt Tip owner and Sydneysider.
You'll love the 996tt for , especially in Tip for around town use.
Speak to Mark )MGS 996tt) he is a great bloke and very helpful.
I hate to save you money, but here goes:
based on your needs, I would recommend trying chip, Diverter valves, intake or air filter and exhaust.
My understanding is the europipe is going to be one of the best(quietest) options for a Tip...you need to be careful as Tip cars are more prone to Drone.
With these mods, your slight lag will completely disappear and you'll be amazed with the transformation of the car. Based on your needs, I really don't know whether you are going to get much more benefit from upgrading your turbos. If it was me, I would try this route first....funny that..I have and am very happy:
There are some very good Aussie tuners, but the performance, cost and ease of chipping is hard to beat. For chip, look at FVD(which I have), UMW and Vivid.
best of luck.

Battery, I will check rigoli out, looks like they do some pretty radical stuff from their web site (no mention of Porsche though).
Hi Rafiki, good to see another Aussie here. Yes, the standard exhaust already has a bit of a drone, and I'm planning to use this car as a daily driver (see how it goes) so don't want to increase the drone. If I want just a moderate power increase not having to upgrade the turbos is a big win, especially as I'm not interested in raw power too much above the speed limit?
Yes, I think a chip that has been well researched for these cars will do 90% of what a custom tune will do (and a lot cheaper).
I had a quick look at UMW (and emailed Kevin who will get back to me later tonight) who looks to have many supporters on this forum which is a good thing and I'm also impressed with the FVD setup from Germany (the laptop upload, tuned specifically depending on modifications, free updates when new mods get added and good price). Vivid seem similar to FVD but charge more.
I'd still like to hear comments about the differences between these tunes and the goals for these programs (eg. is one tuner better for street vs track tuning, differences in driveability etc). I have downloaded the Dyno graphs for Vivid and FVD and although you cannot draw strict comparisons by looking at different graphs, the vivid torque curve looks more usable for road use, but lower overall HP as the peak HP spikes after 6000 rpm (and having a tiptronic makes it harder to use this power in the high rev range). The FVD torque curve has is very peaky, and peaks at a higher rpm compared to the Vivid.
Very confusing - these tunes will have differences in driveablity but I can't tell without some first hand experience from someone who has compared a number of tunes which is better for road use.
Also interesting to see the FVD tune for the X50 - which has a wider power band, I assume because it uses larger turbos?

Rigoli can't get the ECU tuning done right for your car, he specialises in other makes and does a great job of it.
I would suggest Softronic for your ECU Flash as you would be able to upgrade as you add different modifications.
As far as Turbo's go, if you think the lag you have now is a little unacceptable, installing larger turbos will make it totally unacceptable, if you want to reduce lag on what you have now I suggest that you change your exhaust, I understand you think it is loud now however it will get louder regardless of what exhaust you install, this will reduce your lag though.
You will definately need DV's and an Intake which are relatively cheap, good luck with it all.

Thanks Alexandbella, I'll look into softronic.
What about the hybrid turbo setup? That should allow more breathing at higher rpm but also not add to the lag. But if I can get away without swapping the turbo then that would be better, but apparently I won't get more than about 480hp without a turbo swap, and even then there is the chance of some engine damage as you are pushing the little turbos harder (and hotter, especially in the Australian heat).
Also I thought I'd add a thank you to all the people who have helped me in this thread and over PM, there is a good "helping each other out" culture to this enthusiasts community, and once I get up to speed (literally ) I'll reciprocate. Special thanks to MGS996TT who has given me lots of local advice especially around car detailing/polishing, which has opened a whole new world for me.

The stock diverter valves (there are 2) are known to wear out quite quickly and result in some boost leakage - many people replace them with metal after market units that don't degrade.
PS: My car is stock standard as it is still covered by CPO, so I have not done any mods, and in fact managed to get new DVs installed under warranty due to another boost problem that was being kindly addressed by my local dealer
Cheers,
Beej

Welcome! One comment about exhausts. Even something like the Europipes gives a bit of resonance at partial throttle particularly on the tiptronics. My friend runs one and it does have the annoying boom. I am running a Fabspeed on a tiptronic and it is ridiculously boomy, but I am sacrificing for the extra performance... though I may well go back to original soon.
