Ran against a SL55
#17
Okay, Okay so maybe the "Speck in the rearview mirror" was an overstatement. But you also have to remember that my car is not stock, it is running 500 hp at the flywheel.
You guys take things so literally around here! Anyway I was pulling him the whole way and it was not even close. I know he was trying to keep up because the guy in the BMW 740 il is my friend and he was trying to stay with the SL55 as it walked away from him.
I am not trying to bash the SL55 as I think it is a gorgeous car and would probably own one if it wasn't so dang heavy and you could get a 6 speed tranny.
However, my modded car against his stock car he loses end of story. That's all!

""mere 500 hp TT" ben how can you say that. Do you run 500hp in your porsche? You shouldn't call that mere!"
i've driven 500 hp+ cars. the "mere" comment pertained to a "mere" 85 hp increase (20%) over stock relative to "a very small speck in the mirror" between two cars that when stock are very close.

I have the june/03 issue of Road and Track infront of me. They only have the data for E55(pretty much the same as SL55) only I suspect that SL55 would be a bit faster.
996TT 0-60mph 4.0sec 1/4mile 12.4@115.6mph
E55 0-60mph 4.2sec 1/4mile 12.4@116.4mph
M5 0-60mph 4.8sec 1/4mile 13.3@108.5mph
996TT 0-60mph 4.0sec 1/4mile 12.4@115.6mph
E55 0-60mph 4.2sec 1/4mile 12.4@116.4mph
M5 0-60mph 4.8sec 1/4mile 13.3@108.5mph

Personal experience with my '03 E55 is that from 80 - 120 mph a 360 Modena can't keep up (hey, he asked for it!).

Yeah but a 360 Modena doesn't have nearly the horsepower or torque of my tt. My car is 500hp and 500ft lb torque. And my car weighs 800 lbs less than a SL55. So again the speck in the mirror may have been an overstatement but there is no doubt I was kicking his a**! Granted his car was stock and again I am not bashing the SL55 because I think it is gorgeous and would own one if I could afford both the tt and the SL.

notice the SL55 was slower than the GT2 and Lambo to 100km/hr. Then from 100-200 it was even with the GT2 and fell even further behind the Lambo. From 200-300 however it absolutely smoked both of them, picking up 8.8 seconds on the GT2.
This was with pro drivers which will make the manual tranny cars (porsche and lambo) even faster while with the auto there isn't much to be done.
So i'll say it again, i don't doubt that the story happened, but either you got a good jump on him or he wasn't playing along.

With my Stage IV I have made many cars a speck in my rear view mirror and will definately make an SL55 a speck!!!! If anyone in NJ/NY wants to try me lets go have some fun and we can end all this keyboard racing.
