Ran against a SL55
Coming back from Chicago I had the pleasure of meeting up with a beautiful Silver SL55 on the freeway. We were doing about 75 mph and he jumped on my back bumper. I thought okay looks like he wants to play! I dropped into 4th put the hammer down and bye, bye SL55! I ran it up to 145 mph and then shut down. He was a very small speck in my mirror!
The SL is a gorgeous car just too bad it is so HEAVY and no manual tranny.
At one time on the trip home I was leading with the SL55 on my tail, a BMW 740 il and Porsche Cayenne turbo all in line. Nice little train!

i would guess he wasn't playing. none of the numbers i've seen suggest a 996TT would leave an SL55 as a spec in the rearview accelerating from 75 up. all that extra SL55 mass is a huge liability at launch, but once you're moving it's less of a liability. i'd guess he just didn't hit it.
doody.

You must have NITROUS then. I raced my buddy's 996TT in the SL55 and it was very close, but after 120, the SL was creeping up on the TT before we had to slow down. But the TT was only 3/4 of a car in front. This was before I chipped it. SL55 is more of a top end fighter. As far as a small spec on the rear view mirror.... come on... No Way.

"I don't doubt it. I can pull away from sl55's pretty easy, granted my car is modified but a stock TT can pull away from my cl 55. The cl55 is only a tad slower than the sl55 but not much."
first duane (* you ready for Thursday night!!!!!!), i think stating your car is "modified" is an incredible understatement :-) second, while i have no doubt that a TT can "pull away" from an sl55, i'd say making a "very small speck of in the mirror" up to 145 mph is not remotely possible with a mere 500 hp TT - if the SL55 driver actually has the pedal fully depressed.
ps. the typical buyer of a 4400 lb yacht is not the sort to do a ***** out race to 145 mph anyway. he was probably just luxo crusing as the cars are designed to do.

hey, who knows - with half the starters on the sideline from injuries :-( sure hope to head to the sugar for the third straight (should have been fourth!), but they're gonna have to get healthy - quick.

I doubt it, an SL55 can beat 996 GT2(yes GT2, not TT) by "8sec" 0-300km. 8sec can make the GT2 way behind. And don't forget, that's 5speed auto vs 6speed manual

Aston Martin Vanquish 55.0 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 61.2 s
Lamborghini MurciƩlago 34.2 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 32.5 s
Porsche GT2 40.9 s
Sorry but "He was a very small speck in my mirror!" sounds like bull**** to me!

was it a straight as an arrow fwy? or curvy as many freeways are ... in that case wouldn't a modded TT leave the SL quite a ways behind?
and didn't someone post recently the video of a RUF Turbo going to 300+ in less than 30sec?

we have a GT2 and an SL55 and i can say that in no way will the GT2 make the SL55 into a spec unless there are turns involved. 75-145 is where the SL55 really shines actually, once all that weight is already moving. now once we're done the stage 4 this week i would expect the gt2 to jump well ahead but stock for stock both are equally amazingly fast in a straight line.

c'mon guys!! I think BuddyG was being a little over descriptive of the 'small spec' line, but dont you think maybe some of you are taking him a bit too literally?i'm sure if this was the other way around on an MB board it would have been 'the 996TT was a small spec in the rear view mirror'.Now do you think they'd be doing this 0-300 shootout,or just hi-5'ing each other?
