For those who know garage lifts, I have a question...

I am looking for a four post lift that will serve multiple uses.

It needs to serve as a place to store a car.

It also will be for service use. I need to be able to get all the wheels off the ground with this lift.

Does anyone know of a lift that can do this?

Most of the companies that sell lifts sell an accessory that will allow you to jack up the car when its up on the lift. I havent settled on a lift yet but am considering kw-lifts.com, autolifters.com, and doublepark.net.

This is the jack bridge from doublepark:

"JACK BRIDGE ENABLES YOU TO PLACE YOUR OWN SMALL BOTTLE JACK, SMALL FLOOR JACK, OR SMALL JACK STANDS IN TO REMOVE TIRES OR OTHER RELATED MECHANIC WORK. SOME CUSTOMERS WHO USE LIFT FOR LONG-TERM STORAGE AND WANT TO REMOVE TIRES FROM THE CAR WILL PURCHASE TWO JACK BRIDGES AND WITH FOUR JACK STANDS CAN REMOVE ALL FOUR TIRES FOR LONG-TERM STORAGE.

THE JACK BRIDGE IS A HEAVY-DUTY PIECE OF CHANNEL WITH ANGLE WELDED FOR SUPPORT. THE JACK BRIDGE IS PLACED BETWEEN THE TWO MAIN RAMPS AND ACTUALLY RESTS ON THE MAIN PORTION OF THE RAMPS FOR ADDED STABILITY. SINCE THE LIFT HAS A POWDER COATED FINISH THE BRIDGE WILL EASILY SLIDE ALONG THE RAMPS. IT WAS RECOMMENDED BY THE ENGINEER THAT TESTED THE LIFT TO NOT MAKE THE BRIDGE WITH ROLLERS BECAUSE IF THE BRIDGE IS NOT POSITIONED PROPERLY IT WOULD HAVE A TENDENCY TO "KICK OUT" FROM UNDERNEATH THE JACK OR JACK STAND."

Thanks for the feedback. I want a lift that will do the lifting. Not just with ability to put you own jack under the car.

I don't think any 4 post lift will do that -- you'd need to get a 2 post lift for that.

2 post lift wont be so convenient for storage as it lifts at the jack points. The best bet would be to get a 4 post for storage and a 2 post for service. Autolifters.com makes a nice 2 post lift.

We use the Rotary 2 post that have the shorter and lower arms for Porsches. Nothing is so low I can't get it on the lift. I did some work on a customers car that was on a four post and quiet honestly it was a pain in the ***! I think I would have rather worked on the floor. Cost to cost I don't think the 2 post are really that much more and they work well.

Stephen,

But you can't store a car on the 2 post lift.

Why not? We do all the time. They lock for each section you go up until they are 6 feet plus in the air. There are huge lock arms that swing into place. I have several of them and on the bigger projects we have had them up there for months. You have to unlock them and hydraulically let them down.

Steve,
The Rotary has special arms that work on the lowest of TTs and still works on the Cayenne. We have have both the TTs and Cayennes, even my wifes Toureg on there. Works like a champ!

Hmmm... now I'm trying to decide whether to put a 4 post for storage and a 2-post for service in my garage, or just a 2 post and use it for storage. I wonder if it's ok to store a car on the 2 post lift (at the jack points) for long periods of time/often? Wonder if it would be a pain. I'm leaning toward getting both... but looking for any input.

I have 3 bays, one will have 2 cars stored in it -- I can put a 2 post in the center bay -- where my wife's car will usually be parked, but I could use that bay for working on the car when I need to...

I'm considering autolifers.com and rotarylift.com for the 2 & 4 post, and also k-w for the 4 post.
