OT: Advice on inexpensive new car with AWD?

Hi Everyone -- I'm asking you guys (and some gals) this question, because I figure you would know. My '91 Mitsubishi Galant VR4 is on its last leg and has become unreliable. My wife just bought a '08 MB SL550 a couple of months ago, so I don't want to spend too much money to replace the '91 Mitsubishi, and I don't want to use the 996tt as a DD in the winter time snow.

I've looked at the Suzuki SX4 and the Subaru Impreza as sub-$20k cars with AWD. It will be just for routine transportation, so doesn't have to be special. Does anybody have any experience with these cars, or any other recommendations for an AWD vehicle sub-$20k? I'm only looking for a new car, to decrease the hassle factor (warranty and such). Thanks for any input.

Stick with the Subbies if you want a reliable AWD alternative.

Get a 1-3yo wrx/sti....I saw a 2006 with 15k on it, stock....2006 for 23k. I think one can get them under 10k if 4-8yo... Outbacks are nice.

So +1.

I have had and love audis, but they are more prone to cost real money to keep together.

For Cheap, I would get a Suby;

More money, I would get a used Audi A4 or a BMW 3 series XI (awd)

The only 2 new cars I've found in the sub-$20k price range are the Subaru Impreza and the Suzuki SX4. I'm leaning towards the Subaru, or maybe putting snow tires on my rear drive old sedan.

Agree.. I would have to say subi also..But didnt think you can get a new 2.5 RS for 20k? If you want BRAND new..then maybe the suzuki is the way to go.

The new base Impreza is a couple $k less than $20k -- no bells or whistles, no high performance, just basic (hopefully reliable) transportation.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'd definitely recommend a Subaru STI. I had an 04 for three years and an 08 that will be delivered in two weeks. Rock-solid cars...my 04 never went to the dealer once for anything other than an oil change.
