YES! IF you have a good-quality Box AND it's the right kind of Box. Most subs will work better/best with certain types of boxes: Ported or Sealed etc.
A buddy of mine manages a Car Stereo shop, their shop does Not recommend the JL Audio subs that EVERY OTHER shop in town does! lol
His shop believes that the 'Planet Audio' subs that they carry are quite a bit better than the JL's, and because of the HUGE Advertising & Promotional budget that JL Audio has, the Planet Audio's also don't cost as much.
Good luck with your search & purchase.

I have an upgraded db drive subwoofer in my 02 TT. I believe the box was changed as the box dimensions are dependent on the subwoofer size and manufacturer specs for interior volume. Shape of box can usually vary a bit. If you change the size of the sub you would likely need a new box to match. If you just get a better driver, but the same size you might be OK. LMAO, he can't get JL so he trash talks it? JL is a far superior woofer, and far forgiving. Planet Audio is no where on the same level, it is still just a cheap flea market brand. And JL marketing? c'mon, look at planet audio... you are buying a boss amp... that there is some marketing!

People there is more to a sub woofer than loud rattles, when the sub hits it's note, does it sound like it hit the not that it was supposed to? did you feel it. did it sound like it was winding down or did it stop on command when it was supposed to? (it is an amp dampening factor, but the speaker plays a big role in it also) Anyways that statement was just misinformed.

Steve,

I replaced the factory subwoofer enclosure with upgraded speakers and I am extremely pleased with the result. There was some dremmeling involved, but not too bad - you should devote a few hours to properly complete the job. I increased the speaker diameter a little, as well, which made the installation slightly more challenging. I did all the speakers, head and amp....Here is a link to the pictures: http://gallery.rennlist.com/gallery/stereo-install

John, great equipment, I'd probably rebuilt the enclosure before I chopped up the Morel. Those are some great midbass's that can definitely reach into the sub bass region but my experience with them, they start self destructing in the lower sub range. Also I noticed that the 5 will go down further more willingly than the 6, which seemed to surpass the 9.

great gear.

JBONDOx,

It seems like you know your stereo quite well. I don't really - all I knew was I had an Audison amp with canton speakers in my 993TT and the sound was awesome, so I looked for Audison again. Are you sure the Morels are "mid-bass", as Morel bills them as subwoofers in their description? Not that it matters because the sound is great, but I am just curious to know exactly what I have...as a side note, I listen mostly to classic rock (like led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, etc.) and find that I don't like too much sub with this type of music. The Nakamichi goes from -10 to +10 on the subwoofer volume and I prefer 0,1,2 or occasionally 3 depending on the music, but the heavy sub is too much for me. What I like about using the OEM enclosure and OEM grills is that the car appears original inside and I like that look. I wasn't crazy about changing the head unit, but when I found the Nakamichi with OEM colors and a classic face plate, I went for it in the pursuit of great sound with individual Bass, mid-range, treble and subwoofer controls...

Here is the description from the Morel website:

ELATE SW WOOFER
The Elate SW woofers are Morel's solution for deep and accurate bass reproduction. Engineered to be utilized in a wide array of applications, the Elate SW Subwoofers employ the new Uniflow aluminum die-cast chassis, which has a shallow aerodynamic design to minimize sound reflection distortion. The large-diameter 75mm (3.0") Hexatech voice coil supports a one-piece DPC shallow cone, enabling the loudspeaker profile to remain low while preventing cone breakup distortion at high levels. The Elate SW subwoofers combine outstanding power handling capability with a compact size.
The Elate SW are available in 5", 6", 9" and 10" diameter.

It's not really worth the effort to cobble together a system of OEM and after market parts. Either keep what the factory gave you or be prepared to replace everything.
