power steering fluid... mechanic put autozone crap in there... bad?
guys
i went to do an oil change on my car....
.. and i went out for some lunch.. i come back, and the mechanic told me i was low on power steering fluid... he siad he put some crap from autozone... so i told him i didnt think he should do that, because theres a specific kind of fluid that goes in the car.
so he showed me the bottle and it said "meets or exceeds all OEM specifications"
did this guy just cost me a power steering system ?
he said he put in about 4 ounces..

Hi Steve, We are here to assist you! The power steering fluid also feeds the clutch assist in the 996TT. How much motor oil did he use? There are four location that need to be drained. I do not have the answer to the question you asked(if the whole system is screwed up) but the factory uses a mineral based oil. Will that autozone stuff be too thick for the pump or brake down the seals, there is a possibility. Tim

If I were you, I'd take it to someone who knows what he is doing, get the whole thing flushed and filled with the proper Pentosin fluid ASAP. Several people on the list here have had the pump go south on them.

I think you need to first identify exactly what was put into the system - Autozone Power Steering fluid or engine oil? Then get the bottle that it came out of and read the label before panicking.

I would not drive it...just me. Get the guy to pay for a tow to the Porsche dealer, flush, and fluid.....or a similar "high end" porsche shop. You may be fine. But, on a 40k engine and a 1200 dollar pump with a lot of labor to get it in and out....I wouldn't take a chance.
Isn't Formula Motorsports in NYC? (click on the right of the screen/sponsor list to the right)
For this, I'd go there...he may have to really flush it...like fill, empty, fill, empty a bunch of times. Pentosin is not free....
Good luck.

You need to blame yourself... If you do not have a P car mechanic that can do the car on the side for you I would not take it to some average import shop. Obviously the guy didn't know.
Here, just for example,
Do you know that there is a different clutch fluid that goes in the TT and a different one in the GT2-Just so you know how different things may really be.....
