And for the record, from my experience, the two best shops in Southern California are Lucent and SP Engineering.
SP Engineering has very aggressive pricing, delivers stuff on time, and has in-house dyno tuning, and top rate installation. He can also get you stuff from Japan and Germany without any problem. Main disadvantage for me is that they are far from me, and Alex is extremely busy, making him difficult to reach at times. But he definitely takes care of his customers and they do very good work. They did a lot of work to my M5, and I've been very happy.
Lucent is convenient for me, their work is second to none and they make you feel like family. Tom's installation and alignment skills are top notch. Only disadvantage for some is that they take a conservative approach to tuning, for example, they won't sell you an ECU program that run 1.2 bar on an otherwise stock setup. But that's why I like them.
Between those two companies, you'll cover most bases.

He has done all the work on my cars and I have been present when premier Japanese tuners have made it their business to stop by SPE and visit with Alex as a result of reading about SPE in various American, Japanese and European publications. I was also present when he took delivery of his first Lamborghini, drove it for a few miles and promptly TOOK IT COMPLETELY APART and put it back together because he did not like the way it felt.
Tyson is correct. Alex is extremely busy and it can take more than a couple of attempts to get in contact with him. There are reasons for this, not that it makes it any less frustrating (we all want our mods yesterday, right?). SPE is #1 in the country in sales for HKS, Trust/GReddy, VeilSide, Tein, Blitz and any other major Japanese aftermarket manufacturer you can think of. In fact, SPE was the first company ever to be #1 in sales world-wide for HKS and Trust/GReddy at the same time, so the majority of his time is taken up managing about 13 staff dedicated to sales, marketing, shipping and receiving and finance.
The good news for guys like us is that, as good as his sales operation is, the techs in the back are even better. There's no way to know, of course, but I do not believe there is a tuner anywhere that has the ability, expertise, experience and manufacturer/dealer support to work on a broader range of high performance vehicles (just ask the owners of Assael BMW), ESPECIALLY when it comes to forced induction. The company just spent many, many thousands of dollars purchasing ECU tuning software for Porsche, Mercedes and Audi that I know of and, in Shawn ****, it has one of the pre-eminent ECU tuners in the country, although you guys may have never heard of him.
If he ever gets a chance to focus on his personal 996TT like he does with customers' cars, watch out; you'll see immediately what I'm talking about.

I just got my 996TT back from SP Engineering on friday. They did the HKS BOV and a couple dyno runs for me.
The install work is top notch and Alex & the gang treated me really well. My only regret is that I did not find Alex & the SP team sooner!
(did I mention that his prices are fantastic?!)
