annoying sound

please, can someone share their knowledge and shed some light on my issue.
2002 996 turbo,
a knocking sound coming from rear.
the sound is best discribed as higher pitch knocking/ tinging.
does not exist from cold start, only when the car heats up, about 5mins of driving.
when warm and in park, in idle, you can hear it,
can also be heard when i accelerate slowly,
but the sound does away when i push down on the gas.
very noticible when i go up a ramp in a parking lot or up a sleep drive way,

i thought it was rusted mounts on the muffler/heat shield.
replace exhaust to new factory OEM exhaust....sound still there.

have gone to 3 "porsche specialist" shops and to only have them say, take it to the dealer...
they all say they hear the sound, its coming from the rear driver side,(inside?) the drive housing.
they also said that it should not be damaging to the car, since the sound has existed since i had the car for the past 2 years.

had bad experience with the dealership, but i might have to bring it in.
also, trying to avoid dealer costs, car out of warranty.

any suggestions/insights?

I am not sure what sound it is, but these cars from my experience make a lot of weird sounds. I just learn to ignore them.

Agree with Markski....lwfw/springs....... I put a 964RS lightweight flywheel in my car and it does make noise.....

Question: does the noice go away with the cluth pedal pushed down at a full stop at idle and get worse if you release the clutch (neutral)?

the best discription would be a low knocking sound....
at first listen, sounds like it might be a bad lifter...but i was told by the shops that it was not...
can hear it at idle,
give it some gas, goes away.
but when there is some load on the car, like going up a ramp in a parking garage, its very noticilbe...
kinda like a crack in my exhaust....

thanks TT Tommy,

read the previous posts,
sounds like its a normal thing,
now my question is, is there anyway to get rid of this particular noise?...and i dont mean covering it up with a louder sound of an exhaust.
if it is the timing chain,(stretching and expanding as the car warms up), would replacing it with a new one be sucessful?, and if so, any idea on the cost?

anyone anyone?
thanks in advance!

There isn't really a way to fix it. Put on a louder exhaust is about it.

I pulled up next to a brand new Ducati at a stoplight the other day and the clanging and rattling from that thing made my tt sound like a Rolls Royce.
I think those bikes redline at 12k or something.

has anyone put in a louder exhaust to cover up this annoying noise?
does it really mask it?

You can do 2 simple things to find the location its coming from...
1. get a garden hose about 2 feet long
2. get some towels

now, star the car.... when you hear the noise.. take the towels and cover up the exhaust for a few seconds at a time... 5 seconds is fine... have another person try to locate the the noise...
Once you located the area... you can let go if you want to of the towels and take a garden hose and place one end at the location you think its coming from... and the other rend put it next to your ear...
You will soon locate the sound... trust me.

good luck.
