K16/16g vs. K16/24....Whats the Truth Here?

Really want to talk about the K16/16g evolution/revolution. When Vivid first started to promote this platform 3 months ago, he marketed it as an alternative for a K24 setup because it would give you about 30-40 extra crank hp (520-530 crank with tuning), which was on par with the 30 hp difference between stock K16s and K24s. A cost effective upgrade with small gains.

Now fast forward 3 months and the K16/16g platform has become legendary, with claims of 600 crank hp, and tuners few had ever heard of before. Someone just the other day actually called K16/24s JUNK.

I'm just trying to figure out what the truth is here.......logically, 16/24s should spool just as fast, but push more gas and flow better at higher rpms than 16/16g......but now they're crap?

Yeah, I'd LOVE a verifiable 600 hp program/turbo setup for $3,500......but is this it?

Hopefully Vivid Racing brought a tuned K16/K16G with them to TX2K8. I don't know of any times posted by those with this mod.

Shark,

Do your research, but I think so...I witnessed a K16/16G dyno yesterday that was truly shocking, especially when you factor in the cost and the car was only running 1.0-1.1 bar of boost. I was delivering an exhaust and once installed, I could not believe the power the K16/16G's made with only the tune and an exhaust - no other mods, whatsoever...this is a very, very strong package. I would not call the 16/24's junk, but these 16/16G turbos are extremely impressive!

I think the debate may not be really that much of a debate when you consider the pros/cons and the most important point: what are the performance goals of the owner.
Do you want streetable hp?
Dyno queen?
Drag car?
Track car?
built engine?
I think both turbos can be great depending on what you want...What about the K24/20 setup? Not many have these but certainly a great cost alternative to Gt3071 with similar power levels.
The good news is that there are lots of choices for all of us no matter what our goals are!

K16/16gs are a good turbo... I spoke to Todd about them since he did a few tunes back in the days... my friend Bobby had a set up like this a while back..

By the way nice to meet you John. Great Speedtech exhaust by the way. 25whp peak and as much as 40whp through the midrange.

My ears were burning!
Greetings from the Maldives. When I get back, I fully intend to do some 1/4 mile and GPS data logged runs (does anyone have one in the NYC area that I can borrow?)
However, I have no idea how much life my stock clutch has left on it given the kind of torque we're now making with the new exhaust.

I know nothing about the K16/16g setup, so I won't try to comment on that...

That said, I have the older (non zero clearance) K16/K24 setup on my car. I have ZERO lagg and ZERO issues driving the car in Washington DC rush hour traffic. As my many video clips have shown, the car does extremely well on a road course, and as my sig pic shows, It ain't to shabby at a drag strip...

I'm sure the K1616g setup is a fine platform to tune from, but I "KNOW" my K16/k24 setup does everything well... What is truly impressive about the K1616g is the pricepoint for the performance. Very impressive indeed. Having seen the dyno sheet myself (I have people!) All I can say is the numbers speak for themselves...

And the DGI exhaust is the icing on that K16/K24 or K1616g cake.

Mike

No, not yet... but I was scheduled to participate in a local Dyno Shootout on April 5th. That said, Guys who are making 600Crank HP are using the clutch/PP/LWFW I just installed and promptly killed in 500 miles.

My car is most likely making 640-650 Crank HP using my combo, the UMW tune and DGI exhaust.

I have k16's and the UMW clutch and I suspect I put 560/560ish down....so if Mike killed his clutch (and I saw him drive and he drives very, very well), he is probably way over the clutch....I'd have to fully support his assumption of power. Kevin's code is remarkable.... Others code well too..that is not a ding, but good stuff is just that, good stuff.

In the end, can a guy with K16's take them and do something "cheap" to get a better turbo?

TIA.

at 640-650 crank hp with just a 5 bar, aren't you completely out of fuel?

I've seen injector duty cycle logs from other 600 crank hp cars and they are at over 95% injector duty...
