mehrabani - here's a website that helped me do quite a bit of nice stuff -> www.worth1000.com
Everything else is practice, inspiration (I tend to copy GG a lot!!! lol, love the reflections!), and basic knowledge of how PS works. Word of advice from still a noob, master the layers! Once you play naturally with them, it becomes ... uh ... not necesserily easier, but faster for sure.
Blending is super tough (see how the reflection slowly disappears in the avatar? I have no idea how GG does it, and it looks awesome!).
Masks I never use, and don't understand what they do!
Still manage to pull some nice little stuff. But it's far from being worth anywhere close to even 5$! ha!
I can help out if ya need ... as long as it's not too complicated

Zorro... the secrets lie in the masks... learn them grasshopper. It's all time and experience.
I have been using Photoshop since inception in 1990 with version 1 and have used it almost everyday since then... but still learn something new every week. Practice makes perfect.
