996TT vs. 997TT - which is better to mod?

I've noticed that there seem to be a lot more modded 996TTs in the 700hp + range than 997TTs. Any reason you can think of? Is it something to do with the 996TT platform or have tuners just not gotten round to focusing on the 997TT yet?

jt2 is infamous around these parts
1) Many owners won't mod until a car is a few years old.
2) Many tuning shops can't (or won't yet due to demand) invest in a $135k development mule
3) Many "modders" (the "demand" in 2) are, like me, getting the car secondhand. Which means a 996.
4) Time - the 996 has simply been around longer

I'm sure there are other reasons, but that likely covers the big ones.

No,
not the exact same engine.
997TT has lower compression ratio
997TT has better factory fueling system with (2) fuel pumps (similar to what has been done to my car).
997 TT will soon prove to be better, it is just now being tried by "the right shops".
Look in the 997TT forum and there are (2) recently completed projects
(by Protomotive and Switzer Performance Innovations) utilizing Garratt Water Cooled
GT30r's turbos with MORE than 700 Rear Wheel Horsepower.
It is a whole new ball game now.

I would ask Tym, Kevin, and Todd.....there may be some hidden issues with the new car.

Money wise, the older car is a better value....just me.

Let's get one thing clear. The more HP and Torque a Japanese or German car comes with stock, the more over-engineered it will be. I think by the simple fact that the 997 comes with 480 HP minimum, it has more room to play. Everything is designed for higher flow. Air filter, exhaust, throttle body, injectors, etc...

One thing we all forget, is that cars putting out more HP than stock really start taxing their cooling systems. I think it's pretty telling that we never hear about TTs overheating. Not even with stock intercoolers, radiators, etc...

Good point about the dual 044 in the fuel tank of the 997 turbos! I wonder why they are so quiet compared to ours??

997: dual fuel pumps, bigger injectors, dual MAF (?).
This sounds like a much more advanced platform for modding.

For the 997TT 700hp kits are now available. The AWE/GIAC kit which I just installed on my car is just a bolt-on:

modded VTG turbos
headers
exhaust
intercoolers
throttle body
intake plenum
software flash

The cost of the kit is less than $20k and is a weekend garage self install for someone with moderate skill, or perhaps 6-8 hours for a decent tech. This is for a kit that offers full stock drivability too and maintenance of all factory computer safeguards.

TT Tommy,

You pitch the factory turbos, they are worthless...

Understanding is that the 997 will tolerate more absolute stress with stock internals. Upgraded internals appear to be almost mandatory for a 996 (rods) before exceeding 600WTQ.

Would love to see Tym weigh in on this since he appears to be doing the most stress testing with this current (997) version.
