dreamtripper is infamous around these parts
However, in straight lines with minor curves the 55 (whatever derivative) is likely going to be faster, just my opinion. Ofcourse, if you have a modded Turbo or the other guy has a modded 55, the outcome will be different ...

Stock 996TT vs. Stock E55

Looks to me like the 996 got the jump. Out the hole, I think the results would be much different. The E55 shines out of the hole and the 996TT shines in 2nd. just my $.02...

I dont really like the 996tt vs m5 video...thats a bit too much of a jump and the turbo does sound like it has an exhaust...but the m5 stock, IS faster than the e55...doesnt feel like it, but the vids are pretty accurate in their depiction of the battle...

I am a little surprised that people actually think a M5 is quicker than an E55. I have seen a stock E55 run the quarter in 11.77. I have yet to see a stock M5 breaks into the 11s. If I am wrong please point me in the right direction...

our launch control in the US is NOT nearly optimal for launching the m5...the euro model, which allows for a 5k drop is more on par for those quarter mile bursts...

I certainly wouldn't disagree with that. Just making a point that in the US the stock E55 is faster than the stock M5....

That video was a complete fraud. No way would a tuned K4 car get beat by a stock M5.

Stock vs. Stock
In the quarter mile the E55 is faster than the M5
From a rolling start, an M5 might be quicker due to better gearing

Tuned
An E55 is much quicker than an M5 mainly because you can tune an E55 a lot more. In the quarter mile or rolling starts the outcome is the same..

I respect your opinion, but since the 996TT outperforms the CLS 55 on all type of test tracks (lfast turns and slow turns), as well as having quicker slalom times and a much fastr Nurburgring time...I have no idea how you coupld cometo thast conclusoon.

Stock to stock, there is simply nothing tat a CLS55 does as well a 996TT in terms of performance.

Im not arguing about tuned...thats a no brainer...unless GT3Ranger would like to comment on his ASR monster...

On the roll, the M5 is definitely faster when given the room to play. And for what its worth, the m5board videos are generally VERY accurate in their results and are used by many to find out exactly what beats what on a normal day (there are always insane passes to be found by ANY car on a strip...Im talking about when the car is running at its average level on a standard day).

They're pretty much the same out of the hole due to the AMG not having to shift:

E55 AMG Sport Auto 0-200 kph Jan '03: 14.6

996TT Sport Auto 0-200 kph June '00: 14.6

The problem is at high speeds, the AMG car is slowed down by it's auto tranny's drivetrain loss...so the 996 is stronger from a roll.

The E55 that Gustav used for the video on the M5 board was suffering from heat soak issues. I know because I owned an E55. Take a look at my video. At high speeds the M5 still cant keep up...

And I'm a little surprised that you're confusing 1/4 mile E.T. with roll-on ability. E.T. is related mostly to the launch. i.e., get a good 60', run a fast E.T. Roll-on ability isn't related to launch.

From a roll, the M5 is quicker. Period.

Yes, I agree that the M5 traps higher and is quicker from a roll (stock for stock). However in the 1/4 mile the E55 is faster...
