Question Carbon fiber vs. Aluminum

Which one is lighter in final form? Such as a carbon fiber hood vs. an aluminum one?

Carbon Fibre by far is the lighter material.

Some guys on the M3 board upgrade the factory aluminum hood with a Carbon Fibre one to save weight.

density of carbon is about 1500 (kg/m3) (1.65 g/cc) versus 2700 (kg/m3) (3.9 g/cc) for aluminium,

(kg/m3)=(kilogram per meter cubed)

Therefore carbon is much lighter, although certain CF parts require 1.25 times the material vs. Aluminum, that affects the overall thickness of the part and thus the overall weight. (but even than CF part are lighter)

Depends on how the carbon is laminated. If its got a core, like foam core, then it can be significantly lighter becase the increased thickness provides stiffness. Since your not worried about tesil strength but rather the modulous, well crafted carbon parts are the way to go. I just finished making a hood for my M3 that weighs 4 lbs and its stiffer then the stock hood and my previous 8 lb pure CF hood.
