6 speed vs tiptronic

[quote='02996ttx50;3636767]the term cognitive dissonance is used to describe the feeling of discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs. When there is a discrepancy between beliefs and behaviors, something must change in order to eliminate or reduce the dissonance.
So, if you'll allow me, a better description of cognitive dissonance would be: "i bought a tip but i know that tips are not the best choice for high hp applications in porsche turbos, and yet that's what i'm trying to achieve"
so it follows, that to reduce the cognitive dissonance in this example, the solution would simply be: get rid of the tip.

For a fun car, I like manual because there is more driver involvement. The modern day dual clutch transmissions are a lot of fun though and it's definitely a great option if you use the car for regular driving as well. The 996 tip is a conventional auto though, isn't it? That I couldn't live with.

I wouldn't buy a tip, pdk or anything other then a manual. I've owned
one Porsche that was auto, a 928S4. Bought it on an impulse and drove
it maybe 10 times before selling. Don't wanna be a hypocrite but I own
a Jaguar xfr. I have to have a family car and it has 510 hp.......what
can I say. Tip/manual chocolate/vanilla. I'm old skool bro. I turn the
psm off as soon as I turn the ignition. I don't like ABS unless it's raining.
Come to think of it, I should have bought a GT2.

You are completely missing the main point: Tips are not as fast as 6 speeds. Show me one 996 tippy in the upper echelons (that is rhetorical, you can't).

i would consider # 13 on a list of 60+ drag times records to be upper echelons. wouldnt you?

Oh my god, talk about shameless self promotion. Todd what a piece of work.

Jesus Christ man!!!! 2 of the first 3 are tips!!! You posted it!!!

LOL, how funny.
Yea... I'm #13. I'm upper echelon. No, I'm not 32Krazy in disguise.

2 of the 3 are 997 Tips. Totally different buddy. If they were the same, I would have been at the top of that list years ago as I would have spent the money to be there.

no im not bht but iwould like his mods on my car!! it was a simple search on dragtimes. theres a reason top fuelers race bikes and the like use an auto on the dragstrip. on a road course i would venture the manual would clean up nicely behind a good driver.
btw i have a 6 speed but lost sleep over this very issue for months before i made the purchase.

What I find most amazing is that Todd went through the process....and I watched him go through it, talked to him and his mechanics (Steve, and Akram) and concluded that he needed a 6 speed to reach his goals.
Have you, my dear Pumpy, discovered some magic fairy dust to sprinkle over a tip that Todd, and the 20 guys behind him did not have?

Hey guys I'm that #2 car and guess what? I still don't care. You will never beat a car that has no shift. My graph is somewhere in there you can see a pretty decent dip because I'm 2nd to 3rd pulls.
I love my 6speed and I will keep it that. Now if we build an x275 car it will have a Glide.
Drop it already.

Really?? You better have something to back up the claim that the 996 and 997 tips are completely different animals. Can u please explain to the class what the difference in 996 tip and 997 tip is? Besides the computer and location of the starter there
is nothing I know of? More importantly the difference in a built 996 vs 997 tip as that's what we are really comparing?
And yes as discussed many many many times the stock tip is crap. We are talking capabilities of a built tip which are completely different. That's the whole point and outcome of the build....high power application
And when todd was doing his tip nobody was really upgrading the tip. He had has rebuilt to stock configuration.
Correct, hard core dragsters use autos, but the autos in the 996 are simply not designed for high power applications. And as noted, you can't count 997s as they are a totally different animal.
