6 speed vs tiptronic
Question... to all that have the 6 speed... would you buy another.. or would you go to a tiptronic? I had a 6 speed gallardo.. was not fun driving 6 speed after a while... much rather drive my tiptronic 996tt... maybe I am just lazy? To the tiptronic owners out there, what made you buy a tip instead of the 6 speed.?

with tiptronic the cars 0-60 is faster then the 6m/t and the tiptronic is more comfortable to drive in stop and go traffic. the m/t lets you have full controll of the car and feel of it but the first gear in the 997TT is a waste they need to stretch it out a bit so that you have time to shift it into 2nd.

I bought a TIP for the following reasons:
Wife can't drive a stick
My old knees can't handle a manual anymore
Traffic here sucks so constantly shifting is a problem
From a performance standpoint my TIP beats my buddies manual everytime on the drag strip. Now that could be due to his shifting abilities
I would not go back to a manual for anything.

Although a tip is faster on a dragstrip, I personally do not believe it will be 'faster' in a road course situation. (Actually, how many tips are racing?) I like to shift. I like to drive. I drive 6spds in hellacious traffic with regularity (SF bay area commutes of 3-4 hrs) and it's just part of the drive. I am also fearful of tips, repair costs and ability to handle mods. My opinions A

Tip = gas/brake/gas driving experience. IMO not to bash the tranny, it just seems boring, and lack of powerband control. I am sure it is faster in 1/4 mile.... just not my thing...

I have been contemplating this too, but the clutch and tranny isnt really that hard to shift even when you are lazy, or after a softball double header and im sore, I can still drive it with not much effort, then again, could a NA 996 be different from a FI 996?

Yeah, I believe the Tip transmission is in the way of some mods. It all depends on where you want to go. Personally, GT660 more than what I can ask for at this point, and I still have room to go higher, but my next logical step will be 3.8 so it will be a big decision. I do not race my car, but I do drive agressively most of the times (only in this car, can't hold off my horses). Most of exotic cars now days are on some sort of e-gear type gear box which similar to Tip; so I think it is very driveable and reliable at high speed. I have heard many manual clutches went out on this board, but have not heard a Tip went out yet. (crossing my fingers) just MO...

I am pretty sure that with the 996TT, the 6speed is faster than the tip. I'm not sure where some of you have heard otherwise. Maybe in the hands of average drivers the tip is faster, but only then.
I purchased a 6 speed as I also own a Crossfire SRT-6 that has the autostick ala MB. It was fun for awhile, but is a bit sterile. If the tip on the 996 were like the F1 sequential manual transmission on the F430 with lightning quick shifts and matching rpm downshifts, I'd have gone with that. But it isn't.
My 996TT is my fun car, not a daily driver. I guess if I were fighting traffic a couple of hours each day, the decision may have been different. But when I'm driving, I am not worried about traffic jams, and having the 6 speed just seems to connect me more to the car.
Plus the 6 speed manual and the mods has kept my wife from driving it! She has her own car. This one's mine!

a tip was the first 996t i ever drove and i immediately went out and bought one. a 6spd of course. lol. i suppose if one wanted to drive their turbo while holding a cup of coffee, the tip would be the bee's knees and the better choice. as for me, i tempt fate daily at 6am with hot coffee and a broken cup holder. ha.

I haven't driven a tiptronic, but I have no regrets buying a 6 speed manual. I wouldn't really have it any other way for a sports car like this. I've said it before but if I didn't want the hassle of having to shift gears I probably also wouldn't want the hassle of a car that rides bumps so hard, scrapes the front so easily, etc. It's part of a package. If I were in a car with an automatic or double clutch it would probably be much more comfortable, bigger, and heavier.

My tips an mKB modded one, has ultra fast changes do to modded valve block. Has Carbon clutch packs and far more of them in the packs them selves. mine will take 1300nm torque. I put 900 though mine.
Ken on here has an 850 bhp MKB tip and is building a 1000+ car atm still using aN MKB tip. He has the F1 style wheel and paddles on his mine is just the buttons.
If anyone tells you a Tip is boring then they just dont have a clue about Tips. I took out my local OPC guy on a country road to show him what 650 bhp feels like and he **** him self. He couldn't believe I was changing gear manually with the buttons as the car was drifting at over XXX ( dont know who reads these posts, lol)TBH its an advantage not to take both hands off the wheel when the car is 12" off the ground and going side ways. i some times drive mine like my GPA Escort Cosworth. not 100% on public roads but enough to make you forget its a tip car. Trust me outright straight line power is not the only pleasure you can have in 6tt and my MKB Tip is actually a better car than my abilities can truly handle.
I dont miss a manual transmission when driving hard, I miss it when just having a steady drive, I miss the smooth action of finding the correct gear and the passenger doesn't even feel the gear change. I miss the ability to double declutch coming down gears and the general slow speed pleasure of just driving a Manual gives. Trust me you dont want to think a Tip is boring when driven to your ability , as it just isn't.
