Congrats, Must be a beautiful car. Are the wheel centers painted anthracite? A friend of mine has an S65 and the center came painted in anthracite. Wonder if the SL65 is the same. Pics as soon as possible please.

Nice, but as far as experience is concerned are you sure the SL65 was built strong enough to handle all that power, not to metion what you want to add to it! 850QT? You'll snap that car in half in a matter of 4 months if you drive it like it should be driven.

Never the less it is a beautiful car and I wish you luck.

hah, my mom drives pretty hard. but to answer some questions

Yes, the wheels are painted anthracite. We have 20" Staggered RENNTech wheels that we bought last month for this car, but we are going to sell them because the wheels look pretty good as is. (if you know anyone interested in the 20" RENNTechs with Tires, PM me)

Mercedes built this car and the outcome was 1000 lb of torque. They turned the boost way down, and detuned the car for the general public. The whole story about the power/reliability issue is somewhere online, I will try to find it for you. But anyways, the power should be absolutely no problem for the drivetrain.

Speaking of mom's my step mom has a 03 SL55, but after having it a year , felt the car was a little extreme in it's handleing and ride characteristics, but she liked the engine perf even though she to drives like a 63 y/o step mom. So what does my dad trade the SL55 in for. Drum roll please............A fricken 04 SL600.!!!!
She likes the smoother ride. I have not driven it yet ,but my dad said it would be a solid race w/his 360 Modena w/the SL probly walking it at the end. Nuff said. I did not know the SL65 was even in the states yet. I am sure they would have gotten the 65 if it was avail out in S Cal.
With the 65 putting out 800+Tq I can't imagine it would not be to hard to get to the magical 1000 Lbs of Tq. Can you imagine having a fricken 1000 Lbs under your right foot. That would certainly keep the ricer Civics and Galants off your bumper as well as any modded STi's/EVO's.

ok, so I finally got some seat time in the SL65, and have come to the following conclusions:

1. The car is ridiculously powerful, much, much more than an SL55. Any speed for this car is great, as when you put your foot down, it goes! The torque that comes into play almost instantly is unlike any other Mercedes I have ever driven.

2. Traction is not as big of an issue as I thought it was going to be. Yes, first and second gear CAN be squirly, but if one knows how to drive, wheelspin can be overtaken. Not to mention that the ESP system is great on the car. From a dead stop, with ESP on, there is 2 slight jolts of power loss, but after that, the car simply takes off. Now, from a dead stop with ESP off, well, you know what happens then

3. The brakes are INCREDIBLE, and much much much better than the previous AMG cars. This car has the floating rotors and different caliper set up, and the car has immensely powerful brakes. They are as big as the brakes on our Daytona Prototype!

4. Handling- the car is a Mercedes SL

5. The damn thing sounds like a jet, and is a lot more loud than I thought it was going to be. About as loud as an SL55, with a much more smooth and aggressive V12 pur.

6. From my driving, the car feels very similar to a RENNTech tuned SL600 like Ryan's. I am sure he knows how the car is, because power wise they are very similar.

7. Conclusion- Awesome car with awesome characteristics. Most powerful Stock street car I have ever driven. Still stays refined like Mercedes Benz are known to. The car is a great driver, and would put a smile on virtually anyones face. The brute power and acceleration one feels really overcomes that of most cars.

I will get some pics tonight when I get home

with that much torque it would probably be fine with an old 3 speed.
