I have a 1981 930 now, great car fast but little unpredictable sometimes.
I was wondering on what year 996tt i should buy are there better years than others for motors or years that had less problems?????

Pretty common question, but the short answer is no. It appears there were no major changes that impact reliability.
The 2001s had some differeences- no glove box, early ones have warts (rubber blocks) on the front bumper.
In 2003 (ie 2003-2004) the electronics went to the MOST bus. Neither here nor there, just a PITA if you want to mod things.

I dont' know about being the "best"...but it's the last of the X50 iterations...so if you're considering a 996TT, and you could afford it, I'd say the 05 Turbo S would be a good choice....but for sheer value...the 02-03 X50s are coming up with some killer deals...some great options and low mileage car are out there....which is bad news for us guys who have them and want to sell them. The 996TT design has more or less proven to be a reliable and stable platform that lends itself well to modification.
There are also recommendations to buy the non-X50 and mod it by flashing and upgrading to a Stage 2 or 3 thru one of the more respected tuners....that allows you to buy a lower priced car, but then you have to put in more $$ for the upgrades. There are two schools of thought on this....I personally prefer going to the X50 which has the gt2 turbos and intercoolers and flashing it when the "need for speed" bug bites.

Saw some press in CR a month or two ago that spoke highly of all 996 years with the exception of the '03. The article referenced the 996 in general and didn't carve out the various models. I personally don't know anyone with an '03 so I can't speak to any supposed issues with the 2003 model year.

Yeah...what's that?
I spent the day under my 2004X50 looking at a case that says "Made in Spain"... just thought it was normal!
