Mashed 3rd Gear at the track

I drove my 'Cup Car' (as everyone called it) at Brands Hatch yesterday, this car is extremely fast also I could drive it with confidence as it felt safe.

But after several runs 3rd Gear (others were ok) sounded like a food mixer and so I headed back to the pits and then the gearbox started to dump all of its oil from one side of the drive shaft.

My view it needs a rebuild??, anyone had similar experiences with their G/B failing? Im thinking now either a GT2 box or a Quaife sequentail... but 2wd.

Cheers
Miles

not unusual, need at least a tranny rebuild (see my super transmission rebuild) or buy a GT2 box from Kevin at UMW

I recommend the later for ease and cost, mine was possible over kill, but that is what I wanted.

Thanks Tom for the info.

Im looking into a Quaffie Seqential now, new price is similar to new price of a GT2 box.

Sorry to hear that Miles!!

It does happen unfortunately with whichever gearbox you might have. I have the Holinger sequential in my 996 RSR being rebuilt as well, they last a few racing hours only and then you have to open and refresh.

If you want, there is my ex-Ricardo sequential 6 speed gearbox that might be for sale, the person who bought it from me never installed it and is now moving countries, it was in excellent condition, and comes with rare and very expensive GT2 axles. Nothing compares to the solidity of that gearbox, it is the toughest out there, Quaife is truly a joke compared to it.

It cost 42k euros when new.

What gearbox do you have now, the 996TT? cooling, synchros, etc.. or stock?

Cheers Jean, hope you would chime in!
The GB is compelety stock, I guess the hard racing the PO did the damage and my first run was the straw that broke the camels back.
Do you think the AWD creates more stress on the tranny v 2WD?

The Ricardo sounds interesting, there was one for sale here in the UK as well. Perhaps pm what you think you would like for it.
I dont know if youve heard of Quaife seq, there are $25,000 new, appraently lighter v hollinger, they are quite close to me as well.

I know the Quaife, they are good but I don't think they are anywhere near a custom Turbo Ricardo gearbox for a Porsche car. For proven heavyduty Porsche racing, you need to go with Holinger, Motorsports or Ricardo, it will be cheaper in the long run.

The Ricardo is not mine anymore, I can put you in contact with the current owner, it will be a very fair price, but you need to add the cooling (GT2 cooling setup that you can buy from Albertwebb) and maybe customize gearing as it had a 64mph 1st gear. Not recommended for street however.

Miles, I take it you were reading up on the Quaife box, last month there was a big article on it, I asked Andy Fearn and he mentioned the Quaife is not a patch on the holinger unit, they possibly have improved it but nowhere near the real deal, the Quaife was now working out 10k sterling, you would be better speaking with that old timer, think his name is Jean

I just rang the Quafie guys, he says max is 450HP and there is no upgrade. Then the conversion went dead after that! So that one is in the bin.

I could get a used GT2 unit for about £5k and go 2WD and see how that goes and wait for a holly or Ricardo to come up (if Jeans one doesnt work out).

Miles, answered!

Stevo, Miles and I go back a long way, he came to Dubai and bought my ex-965 a few years back.

There is a used GT2 unit on racercarsdirect for sale. You can buy a GT3 box for cheaper if you want, it also has cooling and has the same internal strength.

I know of one in fact here in Dubai, in very good condition. Only difference is that they have slightly shorter gearing in some of the higher gears I think vs. the GT2 (small difference). You would need to put a stronger LSD in it, but the same applies to the GT2 box.
