octane booster

My 996tt is my daily driver. 91 octane is all available nearby. Can anyone recommend a safe octane boost additive?

What exactly do you hope to gain? Do you
need it? What have you done to your car?
I'll bet that with most 996tt's and most
circumstances, there will be zero seat-of-the-pants
difference in what your car does, if you did a
real 'double-blind' test, so you didn't know whether
you were running with a booster or not. Heck, I *know*
my car runs smoother and faster just after I've
detailed it. If you're very consistent at the track,
a stop-watch might detect it.
All that being said, the easiest way is to run half/half
unleaded race gas.

i thought that it was better with a reflashed DME to run at least 93 given the timing advance

I've heard they don't really work and in some cases make for less power. Best bet is to find 100 octane somewhere. I have a station close to me that has it.

It depends on the flash. Some are *for* 93-octane, or more. Some
aren't. And "better" is as I described it, for the most part. If you
taped over your speedo and boost gauge, I'm betting most folks
wouldn't be able to tell if they didn't know what was in the tank.
Heck, running 87-octane can take you perfectly safely across the
country in the stock car.

Have you considered water/meth injection. We are using it on 91 octane cars with very positive results.

Its a better alternative then constitutional buying/mixing octane booster.

How much $?
-$350 to 1000 depending on the system you install.

How reliable?
-VERY

Fuel economy?
-Basically unaffected

Safety?
-Very safe. If installed properly adds no danger to the car or driver.

Emissions?
-Unaffected

Performance characteristics?
- =)... Its more or less like having 100 octane in your gas tank at all times. We like to install this on cars that aren't guaranteed access to 93 octane at all times.

Ease of installation?
- Installs usually take 4-6 hours and most DYI'ers can complete themselves.
See comments above and feel free to PM as well.

Thanks,
Tony

Try xylene or toluene available from paint stores.... ;-)

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html

FORMULA 1
Toulene
R+M/2...114
Cost...$2.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.2 Octane
20%...96.4 Octane
30%...98.6 Octane
Notes: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, I.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores.
FORMULA 2
Xylene
R+M/2...117
Cost...$2.75/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.5 Octane
20%...97.0 Octane
30%...99.5 Octane
Notes: Similar to Toulene. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, I.e. from 92 to 92.3. Usually mixed with Toulene and advertised as *race formula*.
FORMULA 3
Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE)
R+M/2...118
Cost...$3.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.6 Octane
20%...97.2 Octane
30%...99.8 Octane
Notes: Oxygenate. Very common in octane booster products. Has lower BTU content than toulene or xylene, but oxygenate effect makes the gasoline burn better and produce more energy.
FORMULA 4
Methanol or Ethanol
R+M/2...101
Cost...$0.60 - $1.75/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.3 Octane (Methanol)
10%...94.7 Octane (Ethanol)
20%...Not Recommended
Notes: Methanol is wood alcohol. Ethanol is grain alcohol and found in Gasohol in 10% ratios. Both alcohols are mildly corrosive and will eat gas tank linings, rubber and aluminum if used in excessive ratios. Main ingredient in "Gas Dryers", combines with water.
FORMULA 5
Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol
R+M/2...101
Cost...$0.60-$1.50/gal
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.5 Octane
20%...Not Recommended
30%...Not Recommended
Notes: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol. Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing alcohol.

I throw a 20L can in my old suburban's 155L (94 gasohol - say 92 real gas) tank and can run 12 PSI boost with the water/meth injection turned off.

I've tried the ~ 1L TORCO Accelerator with 3/4 tank of 91 octane in my car a couple of times. Ran the 100 octane file perfectly.
