Floating front end - 996 GT2

I know that 997s are better than 996s in some respects....Can suspension or other adjustments make a 996 GT2 get rid of that front end "floating feeling" and lack of bite. I am thinking of buying one for my wife.

Thanks in advance - Gerry

A very light car w/ an engine in the back is going to feel (in your words) "floaty". That, IMO, is one of the many things that makes the GT2 special.

May I ask why you want to get your wife a GT2?

I bought my wife a CTT thinking it would make me a hero in her eyes. As it turns out, I get just as much credit for taking out the garbage and or getting her a Fendi bag. Women have crazy ways of keeping score (evrything, regardles of it being big or small=1 point).

Back to the OT, I found that going to a specialty shop w/ expertise in racing suspension will help (I got a corner balance and increased toe in to make my car feel more stable at high speeds).

The stock setup/geo of the 996 GT2 is useless. Mine has been on similar geo as a 997 GT3 RS since May, and works much better than stock. Will pick the car up tomorrow with new suspension, and can chime in later on how the difference feels!

Thanks for your help.

Any feedback about making the 996 GT2 a better driving car is very helpful...we have a line on a very low mileage one, and don't want to spend $200K on a 2008.

My wife is a very famous professional racer who drives mostly in Europe with Ferrari in their LeMans series. ...no more information or you will guess who she is....she can drive spades around me.

Thanks - Gerry

If you are looking for the same sort of sharp responsive turn in on a 996 GT2 that you would find on a 997 GT3-RS or 997 GT2, then you should change the front wheel carriers (uprights) to the ones from a 996 GT3-RS or 997 GT2/3/RS, which changes the geometry and pivot points.

I have a set of 996 RS uprights brand new if you want them, I was going to install them on my 996 GT2.

Hamann-

I am also interested in the uprights from an RS for a 996 GT2.

I asked for help first - you can also PM me and I will tell who my wife is, she can beat folks around the track on this or any other forums. Some people here know.

Thanks - Gerry

More info please?

Offhand, anyone know pricing on the GT3 RS bits? Hamann, it sounds like you might know but your bits are already promised.

I also noted other gents suggesting other suspension bits? I thought I was going to leave my GT2 alone but..... stuff happens. I would love to hear about cost effective upgrades.

My GT2 still runs stock components, but they have been tweaked. Honestly, it feels great to me. You must realize that my basis of comparison is a thoroughly tweaked old 930 and a few other cars that don't begin to compare to the most recent Porsches. I do rather LIKE the feel of the GT2, but that is because it reminds me so much of a modern interpretation of my beastly 930.

For all my thoughts about how they ruined the GT2 by making it safe for mere humans to drive it fast, I have to admit that it would be nice to not have to pay attention like I am on a qualifying lap. Then again, now that I am over being so damn old, I can simply relish that I still enjoy these things.

Keep the boost up
John Rice

I doubt I am remotely the fastest " driver" here I know everyone is fast here! But I vamtell you the stuff that was done to the car makes it feel ad planted as my previous cup cars

Uh, I don't know "some" of the guys on this board, But I've been in a car with a few of them. I also don't know many guys who can hussle a car around VIR full course at 1:59-2:01s... Matt, you're pretty damned fast and I've had first hand experience in your car... It is PLANTED and I'd love to have about $10K to spend on mine to duplicate what you have in yours...

I don't know of another GT2 that is so well setup!

Back when Excellence Magazine first did a Driving Impression when the 996 GT2 came out, they had a lot of bad things to say about it's handling. They echoed what you are complaining of. Much later, they discovered that the first run GT2's including all of the media cars suspensions weren't set-up properly. They revisited the GT2 later with the proper suspension set-up, including a change in geometry and they couldn't believe that it was the same car. It was very well planted and the "floating" sensation was completely gone and begged to be driven faster. So if you do buy it for her, be sure to get the suspension worked out, sounds like it must be an '02 car. I believe they fixed the problem for '03. Good Luck!

BTW, is she Milka Duno? If so, you've got yourself quite a catch! Brains, looks and wow can she drive! http://www.milkaduno.com/profile.html
