What causes wheel hop?

I was drifting today in the TT since it was raining and everytime I got wheel spin going stright the car started to wheel hop. If you spin the tires while slideing left or right you seem to be fine though. I was just wondering if there is anyway to stop it or to at least prevent it (and I don't want a lecture about how bad spinning the tires is please).

Turn off the PSM. The AWD will hop if launching hard.

Wheel hop is caused by the tires getting traction, then not, then traction, then not, then traction, etc. etc.

If you're launching the car properly, you shouldn't get wheel hop.

What dgussin1 said is right.

So if you're getting wheel hop, you're launching TOO hard at the beginning and then when you back off, you get grip and then it starts to hop. You should launch easier and keep it steady.

Dgussin is correct, if the surface is wet (you said raining) the wheel will hop because with it spinning hard it will dry a small area then skip or hop back to a wet area and continue this again and again until you get off the gas.

Thanks gentlemen. I can launch without wheel hop if its dry. I was getting wheel hop in the rain everytime the boost kicked in. I didn't try launching. What I don't understand is why the wheels don't how when sliding laterally, only when the car is moving stright forward.
