Just my .02
On the subject of Mobil 1, there is a respected air-cooled rebuilder/modifier named Jake Raby who has been at this Porsche stuff for a decade or two. Recently he has been delving into the M96 stuff and has been doing a series of test on many of the off the shelf oils not including dynoing plus getting them sent out to the lab.
Now I know that the M96 is trash and has nothing to do with your GT1 based motors, however an interesting thing to note is that Jake has said that he will not warranty any of his motors that the owners choose to use 0-40 Mobil 1 in. I think that pretty much says it all.

Are there still people using Mobil Water in the engines? I guess there are still those who wrongly believe that it is the recommended oil to use. Even many of the Porsche dealers won't use the stuff anymore. Have you noticed than some manufacturers have moved away from 0W40 and moved to a better oil?
I wonder why the change?

Oh no. Not another oil thread.
If people post, please add some form of data to the posts...just to try to keep this thread sort of normal. Please. No attacks. No sales pitches for oil ...etc. Just data. Engine failure data. Wear data. Builders' formal recommendations...that sort of data. Not x maker moved from a to b. They all move as dollars move them...Porsche too.
Also, it helps if you post to say I have built an engine, own a 996TT, etc. If a person here posts on an M96 engine, great, but that is not as much help to those whose engines have turbos using the oil, etc.

I contacted Mr. Jake Raby to better understand this:

For my gt1 engine, he recommended I stick with what Porsche recommends.
His reply to the above post shows there is more to the story:
Jeff,
That is correct… But that is pertaining to MY re-designed engines based on the M96 platform. I have two oils that I mandate to be used with my engines, but these recommendations only pertain to my engines.
Would you please post this on that forum for me??
Due to all the criticism and drama that comes from oil recommendations I have privately labeled my favorite oil and provide this to my Clients for their engines and have never divulged my choice for oils.. Its simply too long winded and critical and I don’t have the energy for the online squabbles…
Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I’ll monitor the thread.
Jake

Jcp:
Would you agree that Mobil 1 for gasoline engines is not what it used to be? I'd rather be using Mobil 1 for turbocharged diesel engines since it's keeping the old school amount of zinc.
Mr. Raby:
Thanks for posting up, I appreciate what your doing with the M96. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but looking at your post you basically said that your neither endorsing nor protesting the use of Mobil 1. That is except on your motors right?

I like the turbo diesel truck 5w-40.
T2 has used 0w-40 in his 200,000+ mi turbo 996 without issue fwiw. Porsche races the stuff....the could race "anything" they wanted....and no one would care ....
I think frequent changes and common sense will dwarf the value of one oil v the other....the zinc issue aside.
