Found Mobil 1 5w-50 in the USA!
I was at Jiffy Lube in Harrisburg with my beater truck. And, they had 5w-50!
I ordered 3 cases.
FYI.
My car is using about 1/4 a qt per 600 miles on turbo diesel 5w-40 right now.....for me, I like it better than 0w-40 for this reason alone. Go figure. 0w-40 was about 1/2 qt per 500mi.

No...the valve and top end stuff....the newer engines need the 5w or 0w rating. This has been covered here, pca.org, rennlist, and in Excellence. There are people running old oil weights (like 20w-50). It is not supported by Porsche. Period.
I for one don't feel it is a good idea to run 20w in a 996TT. The main issue: the cost to repair the top end..... See the manual for weights. I just noted the Mobil 1 weights. Most others are 5w-40. In LA, I suspect you could run 5w-50 all year.

For the people running heavier weight oil and running ball bearing turbos~
Are you having to having to run a inline oil filter or anything to reduce oil pressure going to the turbos?

basically the higher the number the THICKER the oil, so it flows less. THe less viscous oils have lower numbers, which means less work for the engine. Higher heat tends to decrease viscosity so in hot weather you will see higher numbers than in cold weather. The 5-40 is a good all arounder, in real hot weather I would guess a 5-50 is recommended.

Kevin from UMW is one of the guys with the most knowledge on this subject. Here's a link to a thread which will tell you everything you want to know about 5-50 vs 0-40, Zinc, etc.
