CD Changer for my new turbo..

I will be picking up my new 2003 turbo on Friday (8/12).

Of they are trying to sell me warranties, radar detectors, lojack, etc.

What I want is a CD changer for the car.

They quoted me $1600 for a CD Changer installed in the car.

The car has the Navigation option.

I decided not to get the changer as I feel $1600 is not justified for a 6 disc CD changer.

Sun Coast sells the changer for $699.

I want to install the unit myself.

Is the car prewired for a changer?
Do I need any mounting hardware.?
Is this a difficult installation?
Is the install any different for a car with the navigation option?

The dealer seems to be making a big deal of it but I thing they are full of sh*t.

Thanks for the help!
David

Thanks for the input, guys.

I have an informational update.

I can get the becker CD-6 for about 350-399. Apparently it is the same unit as the Porsche OEM model.

The more I learn, the less this project becomes.

Except that the 03s and later Porsches come with the Porche CDC-4 (instead of the older CDC-3) which is NOT the smae unit as the becker...

Make sure the changer is MOST/BUS -- fiber optic compatible. That's required for MY 2003 and forward Porsches, as Msindi mentioned above.

same here. dealer gave me the same price.

wondering why Porsche didn't throw a $800 thing in there when they built the 120k car. instead charging $1600 for the customer.

sounds pretty dumb to me. is it another supply issue?

The Becker made CDC-4 changer is the only one that will work for a 2003. Becker does not sell it so you have to buy it from Por$che. Guess Porsche got pissed when so many of us were buying the cheaper Becker 2660 rather then the identical and more expensive CDC-3. Becker made a fiber optic changer for Mercedes but it does not work on a Porsche.

The 2003s I have looked at were not prewired. You also need to buy the electrical a fiber optic cables. I believe they connect to the amp vs. the back of the radio head like the older cars. You also need the PST2 to tell the MOST system that a cd changer has been installed.

I have put in many cd changers but it does not look like I will be doing one on a 2003. Jeff

CD Changer

I am getting some mixed information. Some say the cables are easy, some say not. Some people say getting the bus to recognize the player is difficult. Has anyone done this?

This is all covered on the Becker message board.

The Becker 2660 (same as Porsche CDC-3) will not work on a 2003 due to MOST. The 2660 has been discontinued, and replaced by the Becker 7860 which also does not work on a 2003 due to MOST.

Becker says the 7860 will not work or work well with the old 210 radio - not much interest to 996s as you had the 220 radio from 1999-2002 - but there are plenty 1997-1998 Boxsters with the 210 radio, like me.

Becker says the 7860 does not work or work well with PCMI, and of course it will not work with PCMII due to MOST.

Lots of good information on the Becker board, straight from the horses mouth. Jeff
