Yes... You have the 2.5L Turbodiesel version and the 2.0 gas version... And of course the 2 door vs. the 4door model... And then there's the hatch vs. the wagon...

Hello,
I'm very new to the 996tt's so I've been searching this forum for this info.
From what I've gathered, the standard 996tt's had twin K16 turbos. There was an X50 option which upgraded the turbos to larger twin K24's. Other than that, it seems that all was the same for all the years? Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I still have quite a bit to learn.
Internals seem to be the same, as I think I've read people being able to push about 600whp on stock internals (no one specified if it was std or x50 nor the years).
Transmissions - the standard manual seem to have a 2nd gear problem throughout all years. The clutch seems to be the only upgrade from higher hp pushing cars. Auto's, I couldnt find any info. This makes me conclude that the trans wasnt changed either.
These are just my observations. Please correct me as I'm gathering info on the 996tt's. Thanks.

Some early 01's had the ugly wart bumperetts, other then the glove box, the cup holders they are pretty much the same. 02's + had more standard options, and the X50 was a new option. You cant go wrong with any year, but the 01's are the best deal out there for obvious reasons.

there are many differences over the years, however most of them are about trim levels and not about mechanical parts.About equipment, models from 03 have the PCM2 which is awesome compared to PCM1.Also these cars use fiber optics for many electronic parts. The cars are almost the same from outside except from the wheels.01 models have different material (not shape) wheels while models from 02 have the hollow spoke wheels...Also from 01 you could order X50 engine performance package while 04 turbo S production started(X50+PCCB)Avoid 01 because they do not have a glovebox and a cup holder...in order for you to have the most equipment get a model 03-04...

Is aftermarket nav available for the 03-04 w/ PCM2, or is it addon Garmin/etc. non-integrated systems because of difficulty integrating w/ post-copper sound, etc.?
I've also been poking around 996tt, I'd love to do integrated nav & bluetooth, aftermarket addon isn't a deal-killer, but dash-integrated would be great, just don't know how much to care about year, and whether nav exists on the car already.

With the 2003+ MOST bus fiber optic system you must also get a power amp to replace the fiberoptic driven porsche amp...otherwise not too much more complicated.

Ard,
I have a pioneer system as my 2002 pcm1 died about 3 months after I bought the car...and would have been 3400 just for the CD reader part/computer.....
Never looking back. The aftermarket unit is DVD based and has all the "stuff"...xm, xm nav, bluetooth, ipod sound, ipod video, rear camera option for reverse, etc.
And it was 1/3 the price.
And, it has upgrades that are timely. Sure, it would be nice to have pcm2 for looks/but the cars are worth so little now in terms of resale, you might as well have as much fun as possible. In the end, it won't add/delete any value imho. Brings my 2002 right up to acura rl technology levels. Go to crutchfield.com and look around....fun stuff.
