996TT catastrophic engine failure...

I just installed my new K 24/18g turbo's, the Greddy ProFec B, 5 bar FPR from Titan Motorsports, the Promotive tuned ECU and GT2 IC's & Agency Power Hoses from Vivid Racing. I was on my test drive (8 miles total) and did 5 pulls starting off easy with each one more intense. I was on my 5th pull at about 60 or 70 mph pulling like a supercharged Hemi on nos when all of a sudden the engine died and the info center said low oil pressure. I coasted to the side of the road. There was a small oil puddle under the car somewhere between the size of a soup can lid and a 50 cent piece. I was not watching the boost gauge on the dash at the time and wasn't sure how much boost I was making. The car wouldn't restart. I got it home and put the battery charger on it and left it overnight. The next day I tried to start it and it did and immediately noticed what sounded like a rod knock. The dash info center lit up again saying low oil pressure. As I reached for the key the motor instantly died locking up. After speaking to a couple people the concensus seems to be I had some kind of oil pump failure. What do you guys think???

eek! Sorry to hear man, I think your right sounds like the oil pump failed. Now how it failed would be my question. Did you clean the oil tank when you did the turbo install to make sure nothing got in there and into the oil system? Pull your oil filter and look for metal and also drain your oil.
Sorry again,
Matt

On your greddy u can hit the bottom button of the two small ones i think 5 times and it will show you your peak boost. check it and see how much boost you were running..

We hate to see these things happen, but in this business it happens and sometimes its a good reason to upgrade. I talked to Rick today and there was an oil leak on the front of the motor, Rick mentioned about 1 quart of oil on the floor after his test drive and tow home. I believe before his tear down that he likely had an oil leak that caused the motor to run low or dry. The lack of starting is likely the crank welding itself to the rods and hence the rod knock.

Check the amount of oil that comes out of it, that will be a good start and obviously a tear down with analysis is important. Key will be to make sure all the lines are cleaned from the oil and make sure you send the K24's back to get a thorough checkup as its likely that metal went threw the turbo's and could damage the internals of the turbo's.

She's still setting in my garage. I'm going to have the car dropped off there the end of the week when he has room. He wants to look at it before making any assessments.

The oil tank should be clean. I dumped the oil out of it and the motor prior to the install and immediately replaced the drain plugs.

I was running 91 octane pump gas and the Greddy unit was not working properly so I turned it off before leaving the driveway. I later read where you could read the last boost recorded but the unit wouldn't pull it up.

very sorry to hear that. I also destroyed an engine. my crankshaft broke and the case cracked and was not even able to rebuild.

hope you make the best out of it, it will be expensive but worth it.

good luck.

Hey Nero - will do... Yes there is about a quart of oil on my floor at this time and I'm not sure where it is coming from. I got up under the car and it appears to be coming from somewhere up top near the rear of the block on the passenger side. There were no leaks upon leaving my garage as the car idled in my garage for about 30 minutes or so as I checked everything out. When I came home the garage floor was dry before we pushed the car in.

If you knew the greddy was NOT working properly then why did you make 5 hard pulls without even checking the boost? You my friend blew up the car...
you probably hooked something up wrong and ran full boost cause at 1.1 or even 1.3 bars you will blow anything up.... but at 1.5 bars on pump and in 3rd gear your likely to start causing damage...
BTW, did anyone tell you to not get on it for at least 100 miles? you need to break the turbos in.... had you done preventing basic steps you may not be in the situation your in now...
