Anyone have any advise. Is it worth changing out my 2004 x50 996 TT for the new goods (997TT). My car has mods, approx 550rwhp. I only have 12,000 mi on it.

 

No, you'll get screwed on the trade in. Probably more of a lateral move for you, unless you just gotta have a 997. I was coming from a 996 C2 so it was a huge change up to the 997 turbo.

 

you have a great car already...you will have to drive a 997TT to make sure it is worth it to you...I know the 997 GT3 is superior overall to my 996 GT3, although I'm glad I don't have a sunroof...but having driven one on track I have to admit it is overall a better car..but not significantly better to justify the expense..good luck whatever you decide

 

Chuck's gotta good point on this plus on the trade in value it will be rough.

 

If you go through a dealer they will probably offer you 50k at the most
for yours and want over 100k for theirs, hell of a difference but the 997
is a better looking car IMO.

Just from a financial point of view there's no reason to go from your turbo, which is way faster than stock, to a new but other wise stock car. You will get hammered on the trade in.

 

After the 997, Porsche will introduce another newer faster turbo. Then what? I would stand pat for awhile

 

if you were going to choose between buying a stock 996TT and stock 997TT, I would say go for the 997TT if you did not have a budget. All it takes is a flash and exhaust to make the same power that the 996TT makes with about $12K in parts. Ideally the price would balance out. Their was a huge change from the 993 to the 996. The change to the 996TT to the 997TT is suttle, but the 997TT is more "fancy". I like the 996TT as I feel it is still raw where the 997TT is a bit more luxury inside.

Whenever these upgrade threads come up I always think of the opportunity costs, what you could do if you spent the same amount of money but kept your car. Somebody above speculated that it would be a $50k trade......I feel the difference would be larger, but lets work with this.

Just a short list. Yeah, the 997TT is the better car but I'd rather have two great cars than one great car that is getting the crap kicked out of it depreciation wise (like most cars)

 

There's too much of a price gap between the 996TT and 997TT to make it "worth" it. The 997TT is more up-to-date inside and luxurious but other than that I'd probably stick with what you have and maybe upgrade a few things for a few more ponies.

I would hold off for a bit. You have a fantastic car, and one that I am sure you can still play with and make even better. I would see what the market does here in say 6 months. I would also see what else Porsche is coming out with next - I would not be surprised to hear them coming with something updated. Then what will you do.

If you have the cash and money isn't an option - and you don't care about taking the hit - then maybe go for it.

Otherwise - keep what you have and enjoy the crap out of it!
