external waste gates worth anything

EWG's sound AWESOME and add some power and torque. However I only got them because they are necessary w/ full Garrett GT 30's. If you have hybrid turbos (GT 28's, 24/18's etc) then they come w/ internal wastegates.
I would not get EWG's just to get EWG's.

I am currently adding the AFI Header and External Wastegate setup to my car. I am tired of dealing with my b/s internal wastegates so I want the ability to control the boost from .9bar to 1.6/7 bar. I am not looking for any real gains, except maybe spool time because of the bigger tubes of the headers (I am coming from stock ones).
I'll let ya know if there is much of a difference in the next 2 weeks or so.

what do external waste gates do better than internal wastegates.?
there was a thread involving this sometime back

it discussed waste gates

I have 44 Tial Wgs.. and I had a few aftermarket internal ones as well....
they both do the same function....
Is it worth $750 for a set and another $2500 in headers? and $$ to install?
that is debatable.... especially since you already have the internals...
If you running at one boost level without a EBC then in my opinion- dont bother.

Minimal at best on your setup, especially if they are 28's.Best bet for more power is get a race tune.Is it a Giac tune or a EvomsIT?If it is still GIAC call Evoms and get the EvomsIT tune.....I believe it is free if you bought the Evo tune and you will pick up a good 15 rwhp.I wouldn't waste the money unless you plan to step up to a full Garret setup later.

You will gain about 40ft/lbs of torque and about 20HP. The thread that is linked above I believe is the one I posted a while ago. Ed I also did a full write up here - http://www.vividracing.com/forums/pr...t-exposed.html
You will gain power as you are bypassing the stock exhaust and the restriction that has.

Dan it looks like you are running as much as 4 psi more boost with the external set up then with the internal set up. Is it fair to say that's where most of the gains came from?
Its possible you would have seen similar results by turning the boost up with an internal gate. No?

Running a back to back test with the external wastegates, you will see that once the boost kicks in and the wastegate opens up, you are bypassing the stock exhaust system which is the restriction. Since the stock internal wastegate flap opens up in front of the turbine wheel, it also causes restriction in the exhaust flow. Since there is limited backpressure with the external wastegate dumping to atmosphere, this helps the turbos spool up more instantly and create maximum boost more instantly as see on the dyno. At the time of this dyno in 2006, we only used the Tial wastegate springs to control boost with the "resistor" trick. We are all well advanced from that now. Plus, as you can see the boost dropping quite a bit, is because these are stock K16 turbos in this dyno. They really are not efficient over 1.1-1.2bar. This would be the ideal setup for those running K24/18G's. If you are running real Garrett GT28's or GT30's then of course you have to run external gates but still would benefit in the torque curve compared to the hybrid GT28 turbos. This process has been used tons of times on stock turbos with internal wastegates on Subaru STI's, EVO's, and other turbo cars. To answer your question, could you just turn the boost up and gain more power, sure of course you could.

Seems like in the thread link I posted above, Kevin agrees with Tony, or visa versa, that external wastegates don't add hp.
