How do you remove the front air inlets(slats) from a Turbo Front?

I just bought a Turbo Cab unexpectedly(price was right )and the front air intake slats are painted arctic silver. I don't like the look and would like to remove the slats and put standard black ones back in. Anyone help with this?

Paul S-in TX is infamous around these parts
When I had the front bumper replaced on my Turbo coupe, I know that the grills sort of snap into the bumper cover. There were tabs on the top, and probably the bottom of the grills. I know about the tabs on the top side of the grills, because the grill on the right intake, had a broken tab on the top side, and wouldn't stay firmly in place. The body shop had to buy a new one.

If it were me, I'd pull the front bumper, and gently pry down on the grills using a screw driver on the tabs from the inside, while pulling gently grill out the front.

If you're really brave, you might be able to lever the grills from the front side, and remove them. But that scares me (because it would be pretty easy to slip with your screw driver and gouge the paint, or break the grill).

Congrats Lou,

I agree, the painted grills look fugly. The bumper has to come off and the rest is what is described above.

So, no getting around taking the front bumper off?? I wouldn't have the slightest how to remove the front bumper, guess I can have the shop do it. Also, what paint do I use to match what they were originally supposed to look like?

Lou,

I wouldn't bother painting them. Order a new 'black' set from the dealer. Probably the same price and it won't chip and show the silver underneath.

Removing the bumper is pretty easy--here's a link on removing a Boxster's bumper, in order to clean out the radiators. It's all about the same with all of the 986/996 cars.
