Extended warranty

Mine is expiring in a few weeks and I have the opportunity to renew. I've only owned the car for 5 months, so I don't have a really good idea on how often they need repairs. Would you get another extended warranty? 2 yr and 3 yr are the only options available to me. Anywhere from $3000 to $5000 for the policies.

My biggest concern is with the economy the way it is...you're going to see a number of these "engine insurance companies" go under. There's just not enough capital flowing into them to keep up with claims. Money is tight and will get tighter...a couple good hits like a few major engine replacements and their working capital is in the red. They generally have a bad rep for either going bankrupt or just closing up shop and just ignoring the claims....then you'll see them open up under another name. Do your research...there's a discussion on this subject in one of the forums...cant' recall which...but it deals with a company that closed up and reopened under another name. Google is your friend...DO YOUR HOMEWORK....or you can 1)buy a Miata or 2) Take a couple valium, quit worrying... and save your money.

I just looked into it for a 2001 tt with 70k miles and the only warranty company that would cover it was easycare.....$5000 for 3 years. I have owned the car for a little over a year and since then had had a $19,000 engine rebuild (covered by porsche CPO warranty) and over $2000 in misc not covered by CPO (new clutch, new diverter valves, new coolant container). At this point I am not going to throw $5k at the car. I read here many times that the cars are bullet proof so either that becomes the case with mine (eg no more major repairs) or I will sell it in ~1 year.

It looks like you've pretty much covered all the "big stuff" under previous warranty work. If that was a porsche engine, it's warrantied for two years by porsche. Were I you, I'd save my money...enjoy the car...although they're not really bullet proof, bullets do bounce off them....most of the time.

no - it was their "stated care" which is not their best but the only option for an 01 car (totalcare is their best which covers everything). I read very good reviews for this company from other members but given that a)this warranty doesnt cover everything, b)it is very expensive, and c)not sure if I will keep car for another 3 years I decided to pass. Sometime ago I read someone saying that even if you buy the car used at a good price we have to keep in mind that these are ~$120k cars so expecting repairs/maintenance to be cheap is just not realistic.

point well taken. I have easycare and just was quoted $5000 for the totalcare package. I guess the low mileage enabled me to still be eligible. However, the last time i took the car in for service, it was a real pain in the *** to get Easycare to agree to the coverage. And that was with the totalcare package. Nothing is going to be as good as the factory warranty. It seems these warranty companies always have an out. I was reading the coverage for stated care and they say that any covered part that fails because of a part that wasn't covered will not be covered. So, limited coverage is really worthless...

I paid $1800 in 06 for the best 7 year 60K (total miles) warranty that easycare offered. So far they have replaced a faulty ignition switch, MAF and fixed the clutch slave. All known issues. Total cost: $100 per incident. They have been VERY easy to deal with. Both Speed Gallery and the dealer took it with no hassles and all repairs were approved over the phone in short order.

Plus my car is covered until 2013 and another 33K miles since I have 27K miles. It was money well spent and will definitely boost resale by a couple thousand $$, if nothing else it will make the car more desirable.

Just want to point out that my car was covered by the factory warranty at inception. I have never heard of a warranty company agreeing to write a policy on a car with with no existing warrant. You learn something everyday I guess.

I bought a factory/exotic warranty from Genuine Warranty Solutions--4 years and unlimited miles with wear and tear coverage too. Mine is an '02 Turbo with 43,000 miles. I know a lot of different opinions exist on extended warranties, and everyone says the engines are bullet proof...but to me, it's a peace of mind thing. I know if I'm driving down the highway and the engine falls out on the road behind me, I'm covered

I have mine with Prism Automotive Solutions; it will run out this August. I intend on extending the coverage as long as it is reasonable; it has been great for the few times I have needed it for minor repairs. My car is now 8 years old and has 39k miles. It's more for peace of mind than anything else.
