Please, school a N00b on nomenclature
Please forgive me, I am a n00b to the turbo world... What exactly does it mean to say k16/16g, or k24/18g...? I know it has to do with the size/power of the turbo kit, but what exactly do the numbers and letters specify I have a stock 2002...what turbo kit does it have (I'm guessing k16/16g)? I tried the search function, but thought it'd be easier to just ask my specific questions (flame suit on in case...)

Unless you have the X50 package you have K16's. K24's come with the X50 package and Turbo S Cars. K16/16g's would be a step up with modified stock turbos. K24/18's being a larger step up modifying the stock K24's to flow more air. This is the short and simple explanation. There is plenty more technical information to be found as well.

OK, so the "/16g" doesn't necessarily come with the K16... I'm starting to understand--guess I'll go googling

The 16g part is the upgraded part. Typically costs about 1k for the upgrade. My understanding is the the 16g is actually part of a mitisubishi turbo and they frankenstien it with our factory Borg Warners.

OK, that makes more sense to me now Thanks!

Borg Werner/KKK makes the OEM turbos for the 996 turbo. They are either k16 (regular 996 turbo), or k24 (x50/s/GT2 turbo) turbos. The K24 is the larger of the two.
The first number in the set refers to the turbine (hot side) and the second number refers to the compressor (cold side). So, with the k16/16g, the k16 means it's a Borg Werner/KKK K16 turbine with a 16g Mitsubishi compressor wheel. The housing on this particular turbo is made by KKK, and it retains the K16 turbine, but the compressor housing is ground out to make room for the larger 16g compressor wheel.
Same goes for the K24/18g. It is an OEM K24 turbine with an 18g Mitsubishi compressor wheel. It uses the K24 housing, but again, the compressor side is ground out to make room for the larger 18g compressor wheel.
These are only a couple examples of turbos. Tuners also use Garrett compressors mixed with KKK turbines...as in the GT700 kit they use K16/GT28 turbos. With the GT800 kit, they use K24/GT30 turbos.
Hope this helps...
