Sadly its true, they often repaint cars that were damaged on the vessel and then sell as new.

There have been several lawsuits filed against car dealers for selling vehicles that have been repainted without full disclosure to unsuspecting buyers. A well known case involved a Southern California buyer who purchased a BMW that was repainted because it sustained acid rain damage while being transported. You can do a lexis nexis search pertaining to these cases usually ending on the side of the buyers.

It is very easy to tell and prove if it was repainted. Most automotive paint stores/reps have what is called a Mil Guage which measures the thickness of the paint. If your around 10 mils then you have ben repainted as factory is 4.5-5.
Porsche had a problem with the factory plastic last year it was staining paint jobs mostly on silver and seal grey cras I know it effected a large portion of 03 996 and 996tt's here in So Cal
