DMH Exhaust Cutouts on modded 996 Turbo: Pictures/Video/etc
This is copied from my other thread about getting the wiring done for them, but here are my initial comments
Yesterday I had them installed and there's only one word to describe the results: WOW.
Holly hell they're amazing. I coupled this with upgrading to K24s from K16s, 5 bar FPR, p/p manifolds, FVD tuning for straight pipes, etc...
This car is freakishly fast for the few mods it has!! I noticed more lag with the K24s when first driving it but now with the cutouts open it pretty much gets rid of any and all lag.... It feels like a K16 car again but with the great power load of a K24 car. It's amazing.... very, very loud, which is why I like being able to "turn off" the loudness.
It's been drizzling here today so the road is a little damp but I had PSM kick on at 72 mph to give you an idea that it's having wheel spin at that high of speed!! Earlier in the day it was only coming on at about ~50mph - with the stock exhaust/no cutouts - so restricted flow and thus less hp... But with the cutouts (and the exact same weather condition) on later during the day its making even more power at the top of 2nd so it spun them at 72... Amazing, and scary.
The whole install only took 3 hours. It came out great!!
My buddy owns the exhaust shop that did it and he has done fabrication work for them before, so we sort of knew how to go about doing it this time. I was super excited to see the end result.
I took pictures all along the way to show you guys how it was done. The way we did it is about the only way to really get them to fit properly without running into clearance issues with the ground or with the oil lines keep in mind. I was hoping to try and get them installed at an angle but that'd be really hard and wouldn't make much of a difference. My goal in this was to essentially relieve any back pressure.... and it seems we succeeded. Definitely more power, MUCH faster spool, and it's really really loud. Win win situation, and for only a few hundred bucks.
Keep in mind, even in the "open" position, the valves sit no lower than any lowest point of the under body... Which was also a concern, but with how we installed them we didn't have any clearance issue, so i'm not worried of scraping or hitting them on anything... There are body pieces underneith the car that are before them that are as low or lower, so we're good go to in that area.
Here are a bunch of pics from start to finish.
And a Video. I'll have more videos up of them "open" and "closed" and revving, etc. It was beginning to pour rain so I did a quick drive by while a few of my friends video'd it from a cell phone. So i'll get more videos up soon!
Also,
I've had a stage 3 S4 with the same mod, but it wasn't as loud as this, i've had tons of loud/modded cars with straight exhausts and this has got to be one of the loudest i've had and heard. haha
Video of me doing a fly-by at the shop. I'll get more up soon!

It is much much louder in person, obviously... The guys videoing this all have loud modded cars and they were really surprised at how loud it actually was, as was I. As you can tell by their expression.
Marking the area to be cutout of the catalytic converter:
DMH 4" cut out (3 year warranty, great product btw, i've had them before) with flange included
Cat opened up, you can see where it needs to be gutted
Flange welded to tube:
Installed on cat
cutout bolted up to check for fitment:
"open"

Closed
passenger side being fabricated
passenger side done
They look like they hang lower than the muffler but when you're eye-level with them you can see that they're exactly the same height and they don't stick down below where they could get hit

Man I hate to be the worrysome type, but in the future I would NEVER weld on something with it on the car, unless you remove the battery. Even then, the exhaust is an easy removal... Good chance of frying electrical components, seriously...
Otherwise, that looks pretty darned good and gives me some ideas... Where did you buy the cutouts?

To all,
I'm running the wiring through it all today, where would you guys suggest I tap into a power source for the switch? I'll be running the wiring somewhere underneath the center console, but i'm not sure what to hook it into to get power?
Any suggestions? Thanks!

You have a power source for a plug where the factory "phone" option was. It is tucked in under the center stack... Do a search on member Euclid's Iporsche Ipod connector instructions, as it will show you where that plug is... Perfect spot to tap it in for "key on" power.

No leaks, they're a great design actually. My others from DMH didn't leak either... One of the few cutouts i've heard that don't go "pfffffff". haha They're about $320 shipped for a set I think.
