The iPhone has a sound meter app...it is cheap...in case you need to record the sound level. I am not sure the distance used, etc.

Good luck.

In CA, the limit is 95 decible. I believe they position the meter 3 feet behind the car and hold the engine rpms at like 4500. Basically, there was a law implemented to where you could go to the smog referee and get a exhaust sound test. As long as its 95 dB (+/- 5 dB to account for equipment error) then you are OK. Tubi does tend to be on the loud side, so I don't know...

Going to a smog referee later today, hopefully its under 95 decible. I guess I will just shutup and pay the fine and move on if its not, but what about the checking under the hood, can they even do that?

4500 rpm? that's retarded? it should be 2500 rpm as that is closer to where most people drive at. That is what it is in Colorado.

Anyway, what you need to do is have someone with a Harley drive next to you and have another friend film it from 50 feet away. Take that to court and ask them to explain how it is illegal to be more quiet than a Harley.

bikes have a higher dB limit. they are allowed to be loud so that cars notice them.

What did you get cited for? Modified or too loud? Do you have the citation with the VC section reference?

I've personally never heard of anyone being pulled over for an exhaust unless they were driving like a jerk to begin with. Not saying that's what happened here. Regardless, if you have factory tips, I would without a doubt say its a factory exhaust. That's what I plan to do with my car. I have an L-Tuned tip on my IS300, but everything else is a straight pipe

as for 80dBa, where do they measure from? I'm pretty sure if you shoved the decibel meeting into the intake or exhaust it would read above 80dBa on any motor vehicle.. except maybe a hybrid?
