Castrol 5w-40 instead of Mobil 0w-40???

I went to the dealer for service, and the Porsche tech told me that Porsche is now recommending Castrol 5w-40 oil instead of Mobil 0w-40. I know that 5w-40 has been an approved oil weight, but I had thought that it was always Mobil 1 (at least that's what the sticker says under the hood). Has anyone else heard of this?

Depends on the region I would think. If you are in a hot part of the country, then 5w-40 would probably be ok.

Thanks for the replies. If it's on the Porsche approved list, then it should be OK. I think I've read that some people who have gone to 5w-40 have noticed decreased oil consumption, which would be good for me as I burn a quart about every 1,500 miles.

Now what am I going to do with the 4 quarts of Mobil 1 that I have sitting around? I've read that you're not supposed to mix different brands of oil, so I shouldn't top off the Castrol with Mobil 1, right?

It may be approved but I doubt that porsche recommends that oil over another... i.e. mobil 1. Perhaps the dealership believes that porsche recommends castrol now because the dealership gets a great deal on castrol oil....just like how one of the dealerships out here in chicago tells me that valvoline 5-40 is the best...and it happens to be the only one they carry!

I've been running M1 0w40 and go through about a quart every 1000 miles. Based on some conversations I've had with different racers and tuners, I'm thinking of going with Motul next time. I have the stuff in my M Coupe and it's great. It's called 300V LeMans 20W60. Any of you guys have experience with this? The weight for my GT2 would be 300V "Power" 5W40.

Mobile one has low levels of Zinc, I believe the Castrol has higher levels of zinc. Zinc protects your engine.

Rotella T 5w40 HDEO FTW. Super high detergent (zinc) levels, excellent sheer resistance, affordable, and very heat and fuel dilution resistant.

Quality oil... have been running the 300v 5w40 in the winter and 15w50 in the summer (track days)... the car has had a serious amount of abuse without any issues whatsoever.

I found a source for the Mobil 1 5W-50 which is on the Porsche approved list and bought ten cases (sixpak per case). Since I live in the Sacramento area, our temps here range from the 20's in the winter to over 100 in the summer, and the higher viscosity seems to be a better choice given the fact we dont' have sub-zero temps here. A number of the guys here are going to the 5W-50.
