DIY: Upgrading speakers...need your help

Ok guys/gals, I've finally installed everything in my interior except for upgrading my speakers so I'm going to do a DIY on it but need your input. As we are all aware, the speaker set up on the 996 is odd and doesn't allow speakers to be mounted without some fabrication work.

Here's what I know:

The inner ring of the speaker pod is about 4.25" in diameter.

What size speakers are you all using to custom mount? I'm thinking 4"?

Edwin,

I used:

5" in the front doors (part of a 3-way component speaker package with a mid range and tweeter in the front dash)

4" rear

6" subs

j.mitchell70 is infamous around these parts
How is the sound with that setup? I've heard some say the rear fill isn't necessary.

I tried it both ways and personally, I like it much better with the rear fill.

John,

Thanks for your help. Is the door speakers woofers? If not, how did you bypass the low frequency signal?

I believe so - it's a 3 way component with woofer, mid-range, tweeter and trunk mounted crossovers, as in the picture below. The front 3 ways are channel "A", the rears are channel "B" and the subs are channel "C"

Then it's covered with a shelf for a loss of about 3" depth.

That is one of the cleanest setups i've ever seen, kudos to your sir!

Thanks, Zlatko. I was very pleased with the result.

I also designed it with multi-pin quick disconnects for all wires, so that I can remove the amp and crossovers for track days by just separating a few multi-pin connectors.

Looks great. Any issues with heat soak when the amp is covered?

No issues, but the shelf has some venting at the edges to let heat escape. Most of the time I have stuff in the trunk, though - rendering the vents useless and still no problems.

Come on, man. That was my justification for not upgrading the stereo system, as there's no other good place for the amp. Just tell me that the amp blows fuses all of the time, and the auto-off circuitry kicks in every time it's over 70 degrees outside. Time to start researching some audio, I guess. I was looking for a project to keep me busy, anyway.

I'm still waiting to get my new system to come "alive". I've been going back and forth with my installer, it's not been fun.

When its done (or if I give up) I'll be more than happy to put out there what my system is made up of for all 6speeders, though it may not help the DIYers.

Good luck. I had that nightmare on my E36 M3 about ten years ago. In car audio, the installer is usually more important than the quality of the electronic components. The chain really is only as strong as its weakest link. I had one friend who worked in an audio shop that had a thousand dollar (parts) system that sounded tremendously better than another friend's five thousand dollar (parts) system.

Alcav,

Did you put the rear fill speakers in? They seem to produce plenty of mid-range.

Also, if you play with the settings on the amp, you can bring out or lessen bass, midrange, etc.

Mine was lacking midrange at first, but it adjusted very well.
