Decklid Airflow Poll
#34
I have a good friend that works at PCNA (in management). I asked him several weeks ago if the deck lid fan on all 996 Turbos blow air into the engine compartment, and here was his e-mail answer...
"Yes, all 996 Turbos blow into. I checked with our PCNA technical manager".

As I posted in another thread here, the Boxster uses the same engineering approach to the engine compartment cooling fan...it pulls air in through the right side intake and blows it over the engine. The air exits below the engine compartment.

My Indy Service Tech (ex-Porsche Dealer Tech) checked all literature and found nothing designating the proper airflow direction (checked factory P-Car Service manuals and bulletins for all years 996TT).
The literature calls it a "Scavange" fan.

My deck lid fan has the motor below (towards the engine compartment) the fan, and it most definitely blows air into the engine compartment.

does yours run all the time? mine does not...the fan blades are toward the outside but the fan motor is in toward the engine as is yours but I assure you mine exhausts air and only when the compartment is hot..it does not run whenenver the motor is running...try to accept what I am telling you because it is quite possible the GT3 is very different than the turbo...especially if the fan on the turbo runs all the time

Section 5.5.4 - states: If the fan is functioning correctly, the sheet should be sucked to the trunk lid.
I don't have service bullletins later than this, so there may have been a change afterwards in the airflow direction (as some others have speculated).

my 2003 when stock the fan would run also while engine was running and at times stay on after i shut the car off... and again mine was stock and the fan would PULL air into the decklid.. know that I installed a new wire harness that came with my decklid wing its blowing air out of the decklid.. also runs when the engine is off..

if there are two wires going to the fan then all you need to do is reverse the wires and the fan will run the other way...if there is only one wire going to the fan it will require more complex surgery
dock: does your fan run all the time?

Maybe some of the 996 Turbos coming off the line were wired wrongly.
